Then a foreign Diplomat came and offered to dispatch them. For a price of course.he killed them all and kept demanding there were more until he took all of the kingdoms wealth. Finally he demanded the hand of a princess. When the king refused he killed him and kidnapped the princesses. Now the threats have come back. And we need help. This is why Ye were summoned here.

So I'm in? Even though I'm a shapeshifting Dragon? Wow.
Well, Pov, then, and don't blame me if it's bland:
I stretched. There wasn't much to do about being an honest thief. Even boringer when you're a shapeshifter. And the most boring thing to do when you're a shapeshifter, an honest thief and you're not in your real shape half the time. Which I am. I stared at the horse the messenger was on, a powerful chestnut mare with a jet-black blaze on her forehead. It was unlike anything I'd ever seen. Powerful, interesting to watch, but a haunted look in her eyes. Everything about her indicated that she wanted to leave her current job and leave it forever. She looked like she would have been a good companion for someone if she had had a different lifestyle. I mentally checked my calender. Good deeds day. That was a good omen.
I would take the mare today.
My searching eyes followed the messenger for the rest of the day, and waited until night.
When the last hour of daylight slipped away, I changed to my human form. Carefully, I slipped into the camp and began untying her halter. The mare knickered softly, and I knickered softly back.
We were just past the treeline when I heard the shouts behind us. The messenger was awake after all! I mounted the mare and began to ride as fast as I could away. The elms, aspens, Zerenairs and oaks--all transformed to blurs as I rode the mare. She was probably the fastest mare I've ever seen, and we were making a nicely shaped gap between us and our pursuers. We were nearly home free when--
I heard a piercing whistle reverbrate into the air. It was all around us, a shrill note, reminding me of danger, but of coming home at the same time.
By this time, I had lost control of the mare. Her chestnut body lithely twisted around and she began darting back to the messenger. He wasn't actually that far behind, but had taken a wrong turn somewhere and was stuck in a puddle of quicksand. Making sure the mare avoided the quicksand, I took the time
He was a tall, pale young man, with short hazel-brown hair and the pallid eyes of someone who has used witchcraft, with that slight tinge of colour of someone whose witchcraft has turned against them. So this was the renegade amateur the witches were grumbling about. The 'Prince' who ran away from home and tried to meddle in affairs that were not for him. The one who had sparked the Coven Mother's mercy. The one whose, despite all his lessons in speech, the one whose voice was still too quiet to hear from over three metres away.
"Help!"
I could barely hear him; his voice had faded away so much he sounded like soft raindrops landing on iris petals. When I focused on his surroundings, I noticed he had transformed to a semi-transparent blur. I caught the end of his cry.
"If I stay here too long, I'll turn into a spectre!"
A spectre. The worst ghost to have haunting you. I didn't like them, they made too much noise. This was the reason that proppelled my next actions, I suppose.
I grabbed what was left of his hand and pulled. There was a loud sucking noise, and then the blur disappeared. I blinked my eyes experientally, to see the messenger--the 'prince'-- leaning against a Zerenair (a random tree I made up) I've never seen anyone look so pathetically bedraggled. He still looked like he was going to fade away, so I handed him the mare's reins, gave him a cloak and some food, and left him in the perfect alcove, so perfect, there even was a secure, shallow cave near it, and a streamlet next to the cave. I'd expected him to live there alone, but he kept staring at me like I was his only chance to stay alive, so I stayed with him for a while.
That, it turns out, was a mistake.
