Something you never knew about yourself...or the universe...

Hey Guys!
This post is going to state something that most people wouldn't have known. Even though the universe is the biggest thing we have, there are basic functions in it that even the smartest scientests couldn't understand. Here is me explaining you the easiest way the universe works in a single post.

When I say space, you will probably think of the big black nothingness surrounding our earth. But that "nothingness" that surrounds our Earth isn't what it seems to be. It is a flexible and twistable "thing" that shapes our cosmos. Here is a simple way to explain all this logically. What holds the earth in its place? Gravity. That's the first thing a sane person will say. Now what source of gravity helps keep the earth in orbit? The sun. Easy. But then what holds the sun in its place?
That question is what kept scientests thinking. Is there another power other than gravity? Might empty space have a characteristic that keeps everything in place in the universe? That question is finally solved. The answer to all this is merely space. Space meaning nothing.
Space is a major building tool of everything mankind has ever built. The biggest buildings, people, and practically everything else is constructed of space. If you would extract space from a 1,454 ft (443 m) tower, then you would be left with a small speck the size of a single grain of rice.
A new question arises. If there is so much air in stuff, then how come our hand doesn't go right through objects? To understand this question, we need to look on objects in an enlarged state. Let's take a stack of cards for an example. These cards are made from a LOT of molecules...more than trillions. All these molecules are SO small so that the cards don't seem to be made from really tiny spheres. Between these molecules are huge spaces. But we don't see them because of the molecules "dance". They are fast creatures that zap in and out of spaces with the speed of light. Because they move so fast, the spaces seem to always be filled. If you wave your hand in front of your face really fast, your hand seems to enlarge. If you had enough power to wave your hand in front of your face with the speed of light, then it would look like a really large hand.
Now we return to the sun mystery. How does space hold the sun? Let's pretend that the sun is a large dodgeball. All the other planets orbit the dodgeball (sun). The universe and all its space is an invisible tablecloth with nothing underneath it. Since the sun is pretty heavy, the tablecloth underneath it will slowly descend, but the sun will still stay suspended.

                                              Sun
-------------------------------         in           ----------------------------------
                                       \     here       /
                                        \________/

(If the mods don't publish this graph correctly, I'll republish it) The planets will then revolve in the funnel created by the mass of the sun. Gravity is still in the picture, but now it only helps keep the planets in orbit. Do you understand? If its hard to get a grasp on the picture, just let me know. I'll try to help you understand.

Hey that's so cool! No wonder your the leader of SMART. And did you know that the sun is shrinking 5 feet an hour? And that the moon is getting farther away? And that the world is slowing down, and that they added a second to a day last year, so it's no longer 24/7 it's 24 and a second/7?

wait, what???
if the sun isheld by nothing, and the tbale clotyh thing
well wouldnt there not be a tablecloth thingy since the same nothing is on the next layer and next and next of everything
and then wouldnt it still be nothing and impossible for something to rest on nothing
cause your computer cant float on nothing, but the sun can?
even with gravity, the sun would have fallen at that point where there isnt any gravity on nothing
the gravity would have to come from the galaxy's core
and even with that gravty there, the sun cant go and stay between nothing and nothing
so it has to be sole gravity
cause nothing adn nothing cant hold something, casue theres nothing to hold up something therefore nothing cant be there at all, cause nothing isnt existing
so only gravity can hold up the sun, casue nothing cant hold something when nothing dosent exist at all
right???
or am i just talking jiberish???

SingingShark2: Me too! Oh and I also heard about the Higgs boson, but the atoms are still the fundemantal building blocks of the universe.
AquaDragon501: Don't be! Its a difficult thing to understand. Kids in college learn this type of stuff.
PlatimumSwimming1: Great! I can't wait...
CatchingBrilliant26: Thank you for the compliment! I heard about the sun shrinking, but the world isn't slowing down. Its actually speeding up. A group of scientests checked for exploding stars and they always grow farther away. That means the universe is growing faster and faster!
ArtisticBeliever28: I had a little trouble understanding whatever you said, but I think I realize your question. The table cloth was an example representing space. Space can not be nothing because there will always be something in emptiness. If I show you an empty cup would you say it was nothing? No. I'd say it was something because of the cup.
BlueAdventure65: Yes!

No offense, but when I first clicked on your post and then saw how long it was, I was like "Whoa, maybe some other day" and then pretty much zoned out and just skimmed it reading a few lines so can you post a shorter and simpler one cause usually it takes forever for my brain to understand something and if I think about it too much I get really confused.

hmmm
well even if theres IS something to hold the sun up like a tbalecloth, it would only little specs of dust
and dust cant carry the sun
it would burn up befor it came even close
so even if nothing is something, the something wont be able to support the object that something is holding up
so it must be only gravity
if there is something, and thats a if
then it would be specs of dust, does a few milliong specs of dust that are sepeated have a chance agenst holding up the sun?
i dont think so, it must only be the galaxys core thats pulseing enough gravity to hold it up
right?

TigerCobra5757: Aw come on Matt! Just pretend the universe is a picnic blanket. The blanket doesn't bother you, but its there. Thats the expanse of the universe. Now lets pretend the picnic basket is the sun. There is nothing underneath the blanket so the sun creates a depression in it. The planets will be the apples, oranges, and other things for the picnic. They will revolve in the huge funnel created by the sun. Gravity just helps the apples, oranges, and things from falling into this depression made by the sun. Is it easier to understand?

@BullAmbitous64, You did a pretty good job of explaning this. I already knew the concept though. You didn't quite cover the whole situation about why things appear solid if they are 99.9% empty space. I can tell you the rest if you want. It has to do with electromagnetic fields and the particles that make up molecules. I also think there's more to space than just a big, flexable thing. But that would take a lot of explaning. How old are you? Most people in high school don't really understand all this astrophysics stuff.

What?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I'm still confused…
How is the universe like a tablecloth?????
I feel extremely dumb now… :PPL
Let's just say Science isn't my forte… :PPL
I have a couple questions though:
How is all of this possible?????
How does the universe support itself?????
What are the molecules made of?????
Why is the sun so heavy if it's a really big ball of gas?????
Why is there only oxygen on Earth?????

Very good job at explaining it Rob! I think that the stuff that holds the universe in place is called "Dark matter". In fact, observations in the 1970s confirmed the Swiss-American Scientist, Fritz Zwicky right. He noticed that some galaxies in space spin around too quickly for the gravity of all their physical matter to hold them together. And hence, he came up with the idea of dark matter.

So if dark matter is actually physical enough to hold the planets and galaxies in place. Does that mean that darkness has a mass?! (What the what? How is that even possible!)

And I heard that we know less than 4% of the matter in the universe is the ordanary stuff we know about- the atoms and molecules that make up the mountains, seas, stars, planets, animals, and even ourselves. So what makes up all the rest?!

The unknown.
The remaining 96% of the universe is made up of invisible matter so mysterious that there is no way to detect it directly. The only reason we know it exists is because of it's effect on evrything else. It seems there may be two types of hidden matter- Dark matter that makes up to 23 percent, and dark energy that accounts for a whoppig 73 percent.

So what is dark matter?
Dark matter is like an incredibly thin gas that doesn't move. Stars and planets whizz through dark matter as if through a fog at more than 136 mile per second (220 Km/s). What's most amazing is that dark matter particles are so tiny they simply pass straight through us as the Earth carries us around. In fact, a billion dark matter particles pass through you every second! That's amazing!

It is now known that all the stars glittering in each galaxy are actually embedded in huge "haloes" of dark matter stretching far beyond the visible edge of the galaxy. The stars are like a scattering of salt in the center of a very big bun(Sp?) of dark matter that cannot be seen. It is the mass of this dark matter that provides the gravity nescessary to hold the galaxies together.

Measuring the universe expansion rate?!
In 1998, astronimers studying bright exploding stars called supernovas realized that they could be used to work out how fast the universe is expanding. While people thought that the expansion of the universe was slowing down, supernovas showed it was actually accelerating! There is a repulsive force pushing the universe apart that completely counteracts the gravity of ordanary matter pulling it together. This repulsive force is called Dark energy.

And I got carried away explaining astrophysic therories... AGAIN! :P

@Mahin: I can't exactly explain why the universe is like a table cloth, because ROB ALREADY EXPLAINED IT!

How does the Universe support itself? Gravity, dark mass, dark energy. All the mysterious forces we don't quite understand that well but know exist.
What are Molecules made of? Depends on the type of Molecules we're discussing.
Why is the Sun so heavy if it's a big ball of gas? Gas has a mass, and stuff that has a mass has an overall weight! In fact, all the Oxygen above you weighs a ton, and it's all pushing down on you all the time. That's why the deeper you go in the ocean, the more pressure gathers above you! You got like, miles of O2 and H2O crushing on ya!
Why is there only O2 on Earth? life began in the sea, mainly with microscopic organisms and plants. Plants came first, in order to create a breathable atmosphere.

@Leah:
Thanks for trying to explain it... but I'm still confused :PPL
Like I said earlier, science isn't my forte :PPL
But, if you asked me to explain a certain math problem, or explain a complicated book/song, I'd be able to help you in an instant :PPL
I could also help if you asked me to organize or spell something :PPL
The only thing I'm good at in science is asking questions :PPL

Mahin: If Leah or I can't explain it to you simply, try borrowing a book about this sort of stuff from the library. They always have those books avaliable. Or you could search the web for an answer. One of the most popular websites for science would be wikipedia.
