Well, either Dan is like you said "not as much of a barbarian" or the admirer, Molly, is just as much a barbarian as you think Dan is. Of course there is always the chance that Molly could be a Vesper trying to get close to Dan but her parents aren't Vespers or something like that.....I don't know, it is a little complicated to understand.
