"Kate!" I screamed. I ran towards her and knocked her down. The Vesper raised his knife and was about to strike when Maleia took out a stun gun and shot him with it. He slumped to the ground and I rolled and sat up, trying to catch my breath. If Maleia hadn't... I tried not to think about that.
Rasp, can I call you Kate? That's what it says in your signature.

I kept breathing heavily as Rasp bent down at the Vesper. "Did we board the right plane??" I asked hesitantly. In reply a voice came from the speakers "No." The voice was followed with an unpleasant land. "Welcome, hostages."

"Welcome, hostages"
As the resonant voice intones melodiously, I heard a scuffling somewhere behind me. My hand grasped for my sister Madeleine's pale hand, but felt nothing. Panic rising to my throat, I huskily murmured, my voice heightening to a shout,
"Madeleine, where are you? MADELEINE! PLEASE, PLEASE CALL OUT!"
The scuffling increased, and I warily turned my head to the source. Struggling to free herself from Maleia's firm grip, Madeleine grunted,
"Don't panic, Nick. I'm alright."
I froze, confused. Why was Maleia, the group leader, fighting with my sister?
"Nick! grab her legs!" Maleia's voice sounded from the writhing mass of bodies. "DO IT! IF YOU'RE GOING TO ASK WHY, YOUR SISTER'S A VESPER! SHE BAILED US OUT! NOW--GRAB HER LEGS! THAT'S AN ORDER."
Madeleine? a Vesper? How did that happen? I can't remember how--Oh. I know now. Not so long ago, there was a minor war between the Lucians and the Ekats. I can't remember which side I was, seeing Mads was half-Ekat and fought for the Ekats, but I, her fighting partner, was fighting for the Lucians, causing much confusion... Well, halfway through the mini-battle, I was seperated from her and I had to make my way back to Madeleine...and I found her with our long-lost father. I froze then, in astonishment, until I heard what she said.
"Let Nick go and I'll join you."
It was then that our father turned her around to face me. She evidently hadn't seen me standing there. She looks surprised, and I bolt, without looking back. I'm regretting that now, because maybe, just maybe, I could've stopped her joining. Because I cannot doubt that, in return for my freedom and a Cahill, Madeleine has joined the Vespers. It's my fault. It's all my fault. I cannot doubt that. Striding forward, I try to grasp the first pair of legs that waves past me, and pull. It's Maleia's. Once Madeleine is free, she runs down the aisle, away from us, into the shadows which seem to welcome her. The last words I hear her yell are "I'm sorry, Nick!" I try to apologise to Maleia, but she just says it's not my fault, I couldn't have made a difference anyway. But I could've. Even now, I can hear a stray scream echo down the plane. In one of our comrade's directions. We turn around, startled, and I see a sight that has been burnt onto my mind ever since. I see a mutiliated body dangling from the ceiling. And I can clearly see who the body once belonged to. Hope Cahill.

I grabbed madeliene's sister's arms. No wonder the Vespers were always right behind us! They had spies in the area!!! A metal door opened and I felt a prick then all went black.

A torrent of fear swept away my courage, my logic, my knowledge. I was as helpless as a seven-year-old. Well, any other seven-year-old. Cahill kids aren't exactly the average chip off the old block. But the thought kept surfacing, drowning any returning feelings.
It was quite a while until my fears drained away and I retrieved my consciousness. I was face to face with a face far worse than Madeleine's.
It was my father.

I couldn't surpress my groan.

When I woke up...the first thing I noticed was the metal walls, a dumbwaiter...and a guy pointing a gun at my face. I cringed and moved back.
The man let out an unpleasant laugh. "Scared eh? Better get used to it!"

"Yes, maybe more powerful, but WHY IS IT MY FAMILY WHO ALWAYS TURNS EVIL?"
"Not Evil. More powerful."
"It's supposed to be a cliffhanger, Dad."
"Oh. Anyway, I want to say, Not Evil. More Powerful. It makes a better Cliffhanger."
"No, it doesn't."
"Yes, it does."
"How did you get your own office?"
"I'm Vesper Six. Why shouldn't I get an office?"
My father laughs a hollow laugh.
I try to grimace, but my body is rigid with fear. I'm stuck on a plush scarlet chair embroidered with miniscule V's. Small talk was necessary for settling the nerves, but we weren't going to keep this up at all.
My father rests his grey eyes on my mismatched ones, and gives a surprised grin.
"I see you've taken after your mother."
"DON'T TALK ABOUT HER THAT WAY!"
He waves at me, as if to shoo me away, and replies,
"No, no, I meant that as a compliment. You see, your eyes reflect what you're feeling. Yours are an especially fiery red, and it's beautiful."
Small talk. Necessary for both of us. For me, it's to settle my nerves. For him, it's to annoy me. In fact, even thinking of small talk is annoying.
"What do you want with me?"
He smiles.
"Nothing. I was instructed to take you to my office so you could talk to... Let's just say he is superior to both you and me."
Superior to dad? The only person...
"Vesper one."
My voice seems breathy, and disjointed, hovering in the air like a hummingbird unsure of where to go.
It goes somewhere close though, because sthe moment I finish my words, another takes their place.
"Yes, Nikola. I've been waiting a long time for you."
I whirl around to find myself face-to-face with...
Arthur Trent.
And someone unnaturally familiar to me.
Then it hits me.
the other person is Hope Cahill <The original!>

"What do you want with me?"
"I want you to tell Dan something."
Curiosity lured me closer.
"What?"
"I want you to tell him--"
He leaned forward.

I give a shaky nod.
"But how do I give the message to Dan?"
"Easy. Go tell him."
"Then, if you release me, release my friends as well."
"Oh, you don't have to worry about them. I've arranged their... releasation."
I drew a shaky breath.
"I want to see them."
"Oh, you will."
I'm grabbed from behind and all goes black.

I wake to a throbbing on my head, and to Maleia's face.
"Nikola! Wake up! What happened? There was this Vesper and he dragged you in with us. Where are we?"
"No idea," I grunted.
A loudspeaker blared ahead.
"IF YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHERE YOU ARE, WE ARE HEADING FOR NEW ENGLAND OR SOMEWHER LIKE THAT!"
"Well, now we know."

It was hard not to laugh when Jade got on the V's nerves! If I wasn't in this situation I would've thrown a party.
Just then I heard a panel open and Madeleine was knocked out cold and dragged in. The UF team didnt dare go after the panel for fear of what would happen. I could read it on Becca's face that she wanted to leave but I gripped her hand to stop her.
Immediately the Vesper threw me a phone. "Alright Ms. Leader. Call Red. And tell him to fork over the map.
I shuddered as I dialed the #. In 3 rings, Red's crisp voice answered. "Hello?"
"Red, this is Maleia. Send the map inside my office's drawer."
"But it's in the--"
"I said its in the drawer." Red must've sensed something was up so he followed the instructions.
There was a small hope that he'd understood. A small hope that he'd grabbed the fake.

I tried to look around.
All black, splattered with grey.
I tried to locate the others.
No sign of them being near, except Maleia, who's on the phone calling Red, about a map.
I tried to listen to their conversation.
It wasn't hard, I found, because, if you concentrate on what you're listening to, you can hear everything. This, I suppose, is how the Vespers controlled their hostages.
Maleia looked shaken, so I dragged myself to her to give her a reassuring pat.
"Don't worry, Maleia. I have a plan."
