ASHLEY: Chapter 1.A
I should have known the second I woke up that morning that my life was about to be changed forever.
Mainly because it was the second week of summer, and my mom woke me up at seven in the morning.
I groaned as she turned my room's light on, shouting 'Rise and Shine!' as she pulled my blanket off of me. I looked up, glaring at my mother with a look that could kill someone if I really wanted to.
"Ashey! You have that job today, remember?" she said, shaking me back and forth.
My eyes bolted open as I shot up. "THAT'S TODAY?" I screamed, instantly running over to throw on a shirt. My local theater had offered me a job as a teacher's assistant this summer, and it paid $10 an hour; cash I needed if I was saving up to get a car at the end of the summer.
My mother shrugged. "I keep telling you that you need to get a calander." she ruffled my hair as I struggled to pull a pair of shorts on.
"Yes, but I always lose them!" I yelled, running over to get some shoes from my closet.
My mother sighed a grabbed a pair of shoes from under my bed, thrusting them at my chest. "Here's a solution; clean your room."
"I'm waiting until one day when I'm rich and famous and I can pay someone to clean it for me." I said with a wink. My mom let out a giggle before turning around to exit my room.
I walked over to my coin-bank as my mother left and plopped a couple of coins in it. "Only a few hundred more," I said with a smile, writing my new total on my white board.
The next thirty minutes was a whirlwind. I finished getting on my uniform and ate some cereal, then My mom drove me to my job.
I 'worked' for five hours (Even though I felt like I wasn't doing anything except staring at children) my mom came back and picked me up, asking me all sorts of questions about 'how my day was' and stuff.
When I got home, I collapsed on my bed and took a nice, hour-long nap. I didn't know why, exactly I was tired, I hadn't really done anything all day, but nonetheess, the nap felt good.
As I woke up, I yawned and picked up my laptop, realizing I hadn't checked e-mail all day. My inbox was crazy.
Kate: HEY!!!
Kate: Where are you?
Krissy: LOL this is so funny!!!!!

I raised an eyebrow. Did the 39 Clues e-mails normally say they were from Rick Riordan? And what the heck was 'The Ultimate Challenge'? A new book?
I clicked the e-mail and allowed it to load for a long moment. Slowly, the black text emerged on the white screen.

Subject: Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge
Message:
Dear Ashley (SteelBone2),
Hello. You have been chosen among 24 others from the vast fanbase of The 39 Clues series to compete in a Challenge. The Ultimate Challenge.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Rick Riordan. I am one of the Authors of The 39 Clues series. I know this may all be confusing, so let me break it up for you.
First off, no, this is not a group e-mail. This is personal to you from me. If you want proof, I can tell you that you're Message Board Janus Leader right now.
Secondly, last week on the Message Board, we sent out a poll to every user asking the 25 most popular people. You were one of the voted ones. Congratulations.
Next up, the reason you 25 have been chosen is because many people believe The 39 Clues series is real. Sadly, at the current moment, it's not. You will change that.
You and the other 24 will be taken to one of the Scholastic Headquarters to meet me and some of the other authors in person. There, you all will be given $10,000, each. You will then be sent on an all-summer Challenge to find the 39 Clues scattered all around the world.
The best part? It will all be on television.
No one will be in an alliance. It will be one-on-one. You can make alliances throughout the challenge, but ultimately, there will be one winner.
The winner will earn a nice $25,000 to keep and be mentioned in a 39 Clues book.
Please respond saying if you are able to compete. Thank you, and remember to Trust no one.

Me and Dracia were running, Me just ahead of her but she was catching up. We were in the training sentrer Doing an obstical course. I ducked as a rubber log came at me, Dracia did the same and once again we ran. I risked a look at the other Branches, Ashley had just fallen from the monkey bars and was yelling at David. Lovely. Thud!!! I colapsed to the floor as I had just hit a wall. I heard Dracia laugh as she kept running. I got up and ran around the wall, There was no way I could catch up to her now but I still ran. Once I finished Dracia was standing at the end of the line Talking to Viper. I grabed a water bottle and walked over to the 'nellie room' I saw Ashleys Nellie playing ninja with everyone exept Nicole, who was on her laptop. I walked over to her and sat down, "Hey, I thought you loved ninja." I said, "I do but She already beat me." She pointed to lexi. I smiled, "Now what are you doing?" "I'm still writing my book! I have new Awsome Ideas because of this traing senter!" She said then put the laptop away. "You ready?" Nicole asked I nodded. "Alright, Lets travel!" She said. Less than 30 minets later All 48 of us stood around a platform in which Mr. Rick was standing on. Nicole grabed my hand, "You ready?" She asked, "Yeah, I mean, we've been to Lots of countrys so we sorta have an advantage." She nodded, "Think, We might go to Italy again! Then we can say Hi to everyone and mess with Levi!" She said and laughed. Rick spoke louder now, "...And remember to have fun. So everyone...on your amrks...get set...and let The Challenge...BEGIN!"

I write this in tears for my sister Phenix is in the hospital and has less then a month left to live and I will not be on the message board for a while and I will keep writing this but will not post any chapters for a while or if I do they will be very short ~Livy~

After the meeting, I headed down to the Tomas training area of the center. So far, the only other there was Jason. Or at least, I was pretty sure it was Jason....he chucking stuff at the wall for weight practice, grunting every time he released. "Hey there!" I said, "Can I join you?" "Sure." he said as he threw another weight. "So who're the other Tomas?" I asked, "You should know, considering you're the leader...." I laughed as I picked up a 20-pounder. Jason shrugged. "I don't know. Another girl, I think. But you're the vice...." "Yeah.... So you're my friend Jason, huh?" "Yep. And you're Katherine?" "Noooooo" I said sarcastically, "I'm just a pretty Tomas girl with muscle who happens to be famous on the 39clues message board." He smirked, and we continued our throws in silence. After the training session, which was nearly 2 hours of awkward silence, I headed to the launch dock with my 'Nellie', Katrina. It wasn't long before the famous line projected through the speakers. "So everyone....on your marks.....get set....and let the challenge......BEGIN!"

"Let me die in agony!" said Spencer. He then jumps off the desk and approaches Clifford Riley and starts thrusting his head like a bobble head."Why? Why do your publishers have to be so impatient, not willing to give the fans a chance? Why Cliff? Why?!" Clifford then releases himself and answers, "Don't call me Cliff! And it isn't because of the publishers. Every series is like that!"
Spencer runs toward Clifford Riley. "Die! Die! Die!"
"Woah, Spencer, calm down! It's only a few months!" says Saphire.
"I agree Spence. Chillax." said Gabriel.
"I mean, can't you handle a few months?" Monkey said. Gabriel and Saphire glare.
"Just three months? Chillax? Handle it? I will not wait three months! I can't handle it! And chillax?! Don't you dare tell me that! Die! Die! Die! Die!" says Spencer. The rest of the reporters and Clifford Riley run screaming.

Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge
Oops. Forget some part of my little POV...
Miks' Pov:
After the whole confusion was over I had gotten to meet Emzz, Dave (LOL, do I dare?) and Lizzie (I like nicknames).
Emzz started singing some song by 1D. I smiled. Afterwards I started screaming like a COW. Well Dave (lol still) got to trip Joe,the oh so powerful dictator. I saw some of his posts..so (not) mysterious he could be V1 but that was Dray. All of my friends...here. I smiled like I won a jackpot and I did.
I had gotten to meet my "Nellie".
Her name was Anastasia but she thought it was too formal so she called herself 'Annie' She was basically my alter ego...she had so many highlights I couldn't distinguish her actual hair color. She had an iPod ranging from Taylor Swift to Bullet for my Valentine. When I asked her if she had a license, she produced a getaway boat, a car, a motorcycle, and almost every use of transportation in the world...I got tired after the horse carriage.
I was having the time of my life. I got to outsmart some Lucian named "Joe" whoever he was. So I tripped him...and the conversation went like this:
"Hey watch it you little pesky..." and he progressed to cursing...
"You really wanna be responsible for deaths don't you?" I ask
"Excuse me?" says the little nerd. I mean I look like one myself but I'm not some huge ego-maniac dictator.
"Oh...Tut tut tut. Do you know what we Ekats are capable of?" I said, my voice cool. I'm the Queen of Comebacks and this little rat entered my territory.
"No, do you know what Lucians are capable of?" he said and he added a sneer with that and walked away.
'That's it you little scamp. You wanna fight? I'll give you a fight." And I kinda tackled him...What? Did I forget to mention I have two brothers who are Tomas???
(Author's Note: No but seriously I do have bros who are Tomas...They're both on the mb.)
"Who do you think you are?" he mumbled, I couldn't blame him. A geeky Ekat like me beating the so called "powerful" likes of him?
"If you don't shut up and leave me and my friends alone, I'll upload this little encounter. So what do you say?" I got up, he looked at me with hatred and ran.
"Let the Challenge begin!" said Rick.
Well, we got dismissed. I took my backpack and went to Emzz and David and Lizzie.
"What's the plan?" I ask

DAVID CHAPTER 3
I laughed as Ashley fell right on her face on the monkey bars. I felt a little bad, but you know what they say, "She's not Isabel!"
"Woooaahhh!" I let out a grunt as I landed next to Ashley on the mat.
I glared at her, and then we both erupted in laughter.
The Janus Training center sure was fun. The Ekats were probably taking math test, the Tomas lifting 2 ton weights, and those poor Lucains were probably being drilled by Joe, who I still sometimes called FC. But we were having lots of fun. This was definately my branch. I walked over to Emily and Liz, and we instantly read each other's minds and cracked up. Three nights ago, Emz, Miks and I had come up with a plan to prank Joe. We went to Jason to finalize it. Soon, everyone, even FC's allies were in on it. We put on old clothes, and green makeup, and in the middle of the night, woke FC up, and repeated "Kill Cobra," over and over. He screamed like a little girl!
So, I talked with the other Janus for a bit, and then Peter Lerangis finished his talk with Ashley and we left together.
I said, "Did you like the exersize Emz gave you?" grinning.
He just looked at me and said, "That girl is disturbed," and walked away. I cracked up.
I ran over to the Nellie Lounge to see Tanner fighting with FC's Nellie.
"JANUS IS BETTER!!!" Tanner shouted, while Joe's Nellie just went into a boring lecture about the Lucians. Tanner mocked falling asleep and he went away, face as red as a strawberry. I walked over to Tanner, and slapped him.
"WAKE UP!!!" I shouted, and we ran to get our stuff, and then ran back to the small platform we'd been assigned to, and nervously listened to Rick.
" ...And remember to have fun. So everyone...on your amrks...get set...and let The Challenge...BEGIN!" Rick shouted.

This was definately my branch. I walked over to Emily and Liz, and we instantly read each other's minds and cracked up. Three nights ago, Emz, Miks and I had come up with a plan to prank Joe. We went to Jason to finalize it. Soon, everyone, even FC's allies were in on it. We put on old clothes, and green makeup, and in the middle of the night, woke FC up, and repeated "Kill Cobra," over and over. He screamed like a little girl!
So, I talked with the other Janus for a bit, and then Peter Lerangis finished his talk with Ashley and we left together.
I said, "Did you like the exersize Emz gave you?" grinning.
He just looked at me and said, "That girl is disturbed," and walked away. I cracked up.
I ran over to the Nellie Lounge to see Tanner fighting with FC's Nellie.
"JANUS IS BETTER!!!" Tanner shouted, while Joe's Nellie just went into a boring lecture about the Lucians. Tanner mocked falling asleep and he went away, face as red as a strawberry. I walked over to Tanner, and slapped him.
"WAKE UP!!!" I shouted, and we ran to get our stuff, and then ran back to the small platform we'd been assigned to, and nervously listened to Rick.
" ...And remember to have fun. So everyone...on your amrks...get set...and let The Challenge...BEGIN!" Rick shouted.

I carefully avoided wrinkling my perfect attire - a Red shirt and a White tie, my TM clothes. Or at least, that's what everyone thought. I was playing the 'I'm Not Really Bothered' card and it seemed to be working perfectly. Everybody thought I was just a geek who didn't care and had no chance of winning. I wore a shirt and tie all week, and didn't do any training. I just sat in the corner, reading.
Little did they know my full potential. I was not a geek - well, I was a geek - who didn't care and had no chance of winning.
I was actually a rather smart, ruthless person who wouldn't think twice about betraying or disobeying anybody - and that included the rules. I had no intention of breaking any, but when needs must...
Anyway, I had just finished The Lord Of The Rings - The Two Towers, when Gordon Korman arrived and told us it was time. I quickly found Ellie playing Professor Layton in the 'Nellie' Lounge, and together we walked silently, probably looking like two people out of an attorney's office.

We watched as the Launching Dock filled with 48 people all trying to be at the front ready to get away. I looked at Ellie and nodded, and she nodded back. We hadn't spoken, but knew immediately what we were going to do. As Rick Riordan started reviewing the rules, Ellie and I started sprinting for the door to get a head start. We were nearly out of the building as we heard Rick Riordan say: Let the Challenge... BEGIN!!!

I walked into the headquarters and lost my breath; it was SOOOOOOOOOO HUGE!!!!!!!!!
I walked into where the rest of the Ultimate Challengers were. I found the blue chair that said my name on it and sat down. Even though I'm not an Ekat, I studied everyone in the room- it might help me later.
There were the COWS, goofing off as usual, and then there was also Ashley's group, just hangin' around. I sort of wished I would've hung around some of the 'popular' people on the MB, but I still like the people I do 'hang around' with.
Just then Rick Riordan came in and said, "I guess Kurt won't be joining us, so it's down to 24."
"HUNGER GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I yelled as loud as I could, along with some others.
"Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Rick Riordan -" the auditorium got quiet instantly "-and many of you have already met Peter and Gordon." said Rick while
Peter and Gordon waved. "Welcome to The Ultimate Challenge! This summer-long competition will be a great and fun experience for all of you, so be sure to have fun with it! I see many of you are already making alliances-" he was looking at Ashley’s group "-which is great. But just like in the 39 Clues books, there can be one winner." I groaned, even though I didn’t really have anyone to ally with. I saw Ashley smile. I had as feeling she had a plan, and I am determined to foil it. "Can everyone please take a seat as we explain the rules?" he asked. "Gift bags are being handed out now, including your money, your passports, and a surprise." “SHATTERPROOF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” I shrieked, while paging through it. I am really loud. "As you guys look at your books, we want to go over the rules. First: you were each given only $100. You're personal 'Nellie's' have the rest. Second: I cannot stress this enough; This is not the Hunger Games. There will be no killing. No harming in any serious way. You can trap. You can minor burn, scrape, bruise or slap, but if someone gets seriously hurt, then the person who hurt them is out for good. Understood?" I groaned again, but nodded. I was looking forward to hurt someone. Well, at least scratch someone with my fingernails, but not as much as I’d like to... "We will have some training for you guys over the next week, but nothing will prepare you for the endurance it will take this summer." Rick said, looking completely serious. He then smiled. "Go ahead and meet your Nellie's!" I ran over to the girl who had my name- a short person with really short brown hair with a shoulder brace who looked really fun. “Hello. My name is Kari! Wait- are you Connor? I was expecting a boy!” She took her ipod out and must’ve looked at my record thingy-majig. “Ohhhhhhh!!! I must’ve skipped over the gender part on this and looked at everything else.” “Yeah. I get sorta used to it. “Well, how ‘bout you go to the Tomas Training room, and I go to the lounge.” Kari said with an exaggerated yawn. “Yes!!! I can’t wait!!!!” We went to our different rooms and I started the obstacle course. I decided to do everything there, so I was only going to do everything once. I dodged a swinging plastic blade and jumped over ‘quick sand’. Wow, they can’t even put ACTUAL dangerous things in here. I looked over to the televisions showing the other branch’s training rooms and an Ekat caught my eye. She had curly blond hair like mine, she was tan like me, and she had muddy eyes- that were NOT like my purple ones. She was mastering everything she tried- and that was a LOT! BOOM!!!!! Someone crashed into me with a thud, and I fell into the mud in front of me. I screamed in surprise and got back up. The person who ran into me stifled a laugh, but I didn’t have time to argue with them. I had to get going!!! I started doing the course again, and when I finished, I went onto throwing weights, and then after that I- never mind… Nobody wants to know what else I did. Then it was time to start- but before we actually did, I walked over to that Ekat girl I saw earlier on the TV. “Hey, uh, do you, uh, want to be, uh, allies?” I asked her, shocked with myself for saying ‘uh’ too much. She giggled. “Sure. But let’s split up first, so it doesn’t look like we’re allies. Then we will be ‘safer’, in a way. What’s your name, anyways? I’m Daniella, and PLEASE call me Dani.” “OK. I’m Connor.” I agreed, and ran off to Kari, who was waiting for me. Dani’s looks sort of goth, but she looked fine enough. "...And remember to have fun. So everyone...on your marks...get set...and let The Challenge...BEGIN!" Rick Riordan, my ultimate favorite author, shouted.

I watched Ashley fall on the grond for the twentieth time. Okay, maybe not twenty, but close enough.
David, Liz, Ashley, and Emily were the other four Janus here. They were all hanging around the monkey bars, talking and laughing and having fun. I had never been BFFs with them or anything, so that would explain why they had, like, a hundred inside jokes. But I didn't mind. I liked working on my own. I had finished a 550-piece puzzle of the fire (Gideon's, not Amy's and Dan's), and was now working on one of Gideon's ring.
I saw Peter Lerangis walk over to the other four. He said something to Ashley that made her laugh, and then he said, "...That goes for all of you. Hurry up!"
The other four Janus raced off, and I did, too, assuming that Peter meant for us to find our "Nellies" and get our stuff.
I quickly found Piper sitting by a water fountain, texting. "Hey, Piper," I said. "It's time to start."
She looked up. "Seriously?" she said, surprised. "Already?"
"Yeah," I said. "Let's go."
Piper shoved her phone into her back pocket, and I followed her to where everyone else was standing. Rick was standing on a stage, going over the rules.
"No killing, and remember to hav fun. So everyone- on your mark- get set- go!" Rick threw his arms up in the air. "Let the Challenge BEGIN!"

I soon got out of the chair. Spencer forgot that I was a Monkey, so it was easy, it was just get off the rope by the wall. Then, I had to talk to Rick:
'I can´t believe you made Annabeth do that! She can´t just k-'
'There are people who haven´t read The Mark of Athena here, okay? Look, I think David is behind this wall trying to hear.'
Then, I went back to the reporters room to interview Hadix.
'Spencer, let me do it this time, okay?'
'No!'
'Thanks'
With that "discussion", I walked to 'The Chair of Thruth', as Sapphire had gaved as name, and waited for Margaret. She soon apeared and sitted, so I began with the questions:
'Do you know the story of Nicholas Flamel?'
'No... I guess...'
'He is imortal! I suspect that the Vice-President of Chile is him. Do you agree?'
'What?'
' And maybe Spencer is his wife, Perenelle. What? Ops... I think we will have commercial break now... Spencer will take me to the terrorists! Good bye, good world...'

Livys pov: Rick talked a lot I didn't listen and then we got shatterproof sweet and then we met our nellies mine had black hair with bright pink highlights ugh and has on a bright orange and pink dress UGH SIS WHY DID I HAVE TO GET A GIRLY- GIRL I asked my sister in my head in reply she said I PITTY YOU LIVY YOUR GOING TO HAVE TO BE STUCK WITH HER FOR THE ENTIRE SUMMER UGH then my Nellie came over to me and said bubbly "Hi I'm Cassidy, but you can call me Cassy, so your Livy that's a strange name is that your real name?" she was way to bubbly I glared at her but it didn't seem to effect her she just kept that overly flamboyant smile on "just show me to the Tomas training room." Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge
Haven't posted here or been keeping up with these posts.... oh well.
So are we already on TV or are we training? Sorry if this is different from other people's posts of the Ekat training center thing...

I walked into the Ekat training center. It was big and spacious.
Surprisingly, we weren't doing math tests (David....), there was an obstacle course and those tires that foot ball players run through to the left of me. I saw Isabel and smiled. She was busy with an instructor.
It was sort of like the Huger games training place, except there wasn't edible plants and knot tables.
Or weapon tables.
I walked over to the obstacle course and started going through it. As I climbed over a wall, I wondered why we were doing this.
I guess it was because they thought we needed to be fit instead of taking history or math tests... which almost all of us probably already did at home.
Then I walked over to Isabel and we chatted for a while. I couldn't believe I actually was doing this without my parents permission... I would probably be classified as a goody-goody. But I do cause trouble sometimes... I did miss them and Kayla.

That was it.
Oh, I got a phone! No data plan though.... I'm still working out texting! (IKR? I'm a teenage girl in the 21st century!! O.o)
This is the first time I've ever had a phone.
And my mom's only texted once besides after she got her new phone...
I have no one to call yet though.

Yes Joe, but in training, we train with the kids from our own branch. Plus we don't form official alliances until the challenge actually starts. It need to be informal, since only one will win.

Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge

I thought back to earlier this week, when I had REALLY felt like it was happening.
I had been chatting with a few COWS and Isabel, then a man stepped onto the stage.
"Kurt will not be joining us, so it's down to 24!"
I suddenly caught a few people's eyes, and a few of us yelled, "HUNGER GAMES!" Including me.
The man continued, after looking at us thoughtfully.
"This sumer-long competition will be a great and fun experience for all of you, so be sure to have fun with it!
I see many of you are already making alliances-" he had looked at a group farther away "-which is great. But just like in the 39 Clues books, there can be one winner."
A lot of the room groaned and looked at each other sadly. Some people sneered at others though.
"Gift bags are being handed out now, including your money, your passports, and a surprise."
"Shatterproof!" a Lucian girl near me had screamed.
"We figured you would like some road-reading" Rick said. I snorted and leaned over to Isabel, "This will take me a couple hours. Goo thing I brought tons of books!"
"We now want to go over the rules. First: you were each given only $100. You're personal 'Nellie's' have the rest." I saw a group of young adults, probably in their twenties, and they waved and smiled at us.
Please get a girl, please get a girl! I had pleaded silently.
"Second, I cannot stress this enough: This is not the Hunger Games. There will be no killing. No harming in any serious way. You can trap. You can minor burn, scrape, bruise or slap, but if someone gets seriously hurt, then the person who hurt them is out for good. Understood?"
I had sighed with relief. "Phew." I had heard some people say.
"We will have some training for you through the coming week, but nothing will prepare you for this summer. Now go ahead and meet your Nellie's!"
One had come over to me.
"Violet, huh? Well, I'm your 'Nellie!' "
I looked her over.
She was muscular, for a girl, I remembered, and she had pulled back her auburn hair into a high pony-tail.
She had blue-grey eyes and had a flashing smile. She was really pretty, I had thought. "Hi. Yeah, I'm Violet. Can I call you something else, cause "Nellie's" not gonna cut it." I had remembered saying with a smile. "Oh. Yeah, I'm Rachel. Nice to meet you." I was relieved she hadn't made me high five, shake hands, or fist bump her.
Those were always awkward.
"What branch are you?" I had asked. "I'm a Madrigal. Well, I'm also half Ekat."
Suddenly, someone tapped me,interupting my day dream-rememberance thing. "Oh, Hey." I said. "Hey. Listen, you're sort of standing in front of the obstacle course..."
"Oh. Sorry," I said, blushing. I moved out of the way.
