ASHLEY: Chapter 1.A
I should have known the second I woke up that morning that my life was about to be changed forever.
Mainly because it was the second week of summer, and my mom woke me up at seven in the morning.
I groaned as she turned my room's light on, shouting 'Rise and Shine!' as she pulled my blanket off of me. I looked up, glaring at my mother with a look that could kill someone if I really wanted to.
"Ashey! You have that job today, remember?" she said, shaking me back and forth.
My eyes bolted open as I shot up. "THAT'S TODAY?" I screamed, instantly running over to throw on a shirt. My local theater had offered me a job as a teacher's assistant this summer, and it paid $10 an hour; cash I needed if I was saving up to get a car at the end of the summer.
My mother shrugged. "I keep telling you that you need to get a calander." she ruffled my hair as I struggled to pull a pair of shorts on.
"Yes, but I always lose them!" I yelled, running over to get some shoes from my closet.
My mother sighed a grabbed a pair of shoes from under my bed, thrusting them at my chest. "Here's a solution; clean your room."
"I'm waiting until one day when I'm rich and famous and I can pay someone to clean it for me." I said with a wink. My mom let out a giggle before turning around to exit my room.
I walked over to my coin-bank as my mother left and plopped a couple of coins in it. "Only a few hundred more," I said with a smile, writing my new total on my white board.
The next thirty minutes was a whirlwind. I finished getting on my uniform and ate some cereal, then My mom drove me to my job.
I 'worked' for five hours (Even though I felt like I wasn't doing anything except staring at children) my mom came back and picked me up, asking me all sorts of questions about 'how my day was' and stuff.
When I got home, I collapsed on my bed and took a nice, hour-long nap. I didn't know why, exactly I was tired, I hadn't really done anything all day, but nonetheess, the nap felt good.
As I woke up, I yawned and picked up my laptop, realizing I hadn't checked e-mail all day. My inbox was crazy.
Kate: HEY!!!
Kate: Where are you?
Krissy: LOL this is so funny!!!!!
Rick Riordan: Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge.
I raised an eyebrow. Did the 39 Clues e-mails normally say they were from Rick Riordan? And what the heck was 'The Ultimate Challenge'? A new book?
I clicked the e-mail and allowed it to load for a long moment. Slowly, the black text emerged on the white screen.

Dear Ashley (SteelBone2),
Hello. You have been chosen among 24 others from the vast fanbase of The 39 Clues series to compete in a Challenge. The Ultimate Challenge.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Rick Riordan. I am one of the Authors of The 39 Clues series. I know this may all be confusing, so let me break it up for you.
First off, no, this is not a group e-mail. This is personal to you from me. If you want proof, I can tell you that you're Message Board Janus Leader right now.
Secondly, last week on the Message Board, we sent out a poll to every user asking the 25 most popular people. You were one of the voted ones. Congratulations.
Next up, the reason you 25 have been chosen is because many people believe The 39 Clues series is real. Sadly, at the current moment, it's not. You will change that.
You and the other 24 will be taken to one of the Scholastic Headquarters to meet me and some of the other authors in person. There, you all will be given $10,000, each. You will then be sent on an all-summer Challenge to find the 39 Clues scattered all around the world.
The best part? It will all be on television.
No one will be in an alliance. It will be one-on-one. You can make alliances throughout the challenge, but ultimately, there will be one winner.
The winner will earn a nice $25,000 to keep and be mentioned in a 39 Clues book.
Please respond saying if you are able to compete. Thank you, and remember to Trust no one.
Rick Riordan I stared at the e-mail for a long time before I screamed: "MOM!!!"

I sighed.
Another BORING summer vacation day. When is something EXCITING going to happen!?!?!
Well, actually we're supposed to go on vacation and all that other stuff, but that's IN A LONG TIME..... and those those are usually also boring. None of my cousins like sports or anything, and that's pretty much all I think is exciting.
I decided to check my e-mail, since there isn't anything else to do.
When it pulled up, this is what showed up:
Rick Riordan: Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge
Since this was interesting- and it was my favorite author e-mailing me- I opened it up.
It read:

Rick Riordan
My mouth dropped open; I couldn't believe this! I'm going to be on a televised
competition around. The. World!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then I realized that my parents might not let me go.
"NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!" I yelled out loud. "I HAVE to
goooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"Connor? Is everything all right up there in your room?!?!" my mom asked from the
kitchen downstairs.
Oops, I thought. I forgot she was in the house.
"Yeah!!!!!! Everything's fine!!!!!!!!! But I need to show you something!!!!!!"
**********************************************
My mom looked at the e-mail and frowned.
"Connor, honey, I don't know... This sounds kind of... dangerous. I wouldn't want
you to get hurt."
"But Mooom!!! Who would want to hurt a pretty little (OK, not LITTLE) girl like
ME?!?!" I have yelled, half begged my mom, batting my eyelashes. "Can I PLEASE
go?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
"Hmmmmmm..." Mom said.
"WELL, WHAT'S THE ANSWER!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????!?" I screamed.
"No." she answered.
Fine, be like that, I thought. I'm just going to have to go without her
knowing...
OK, well, I'm going to sneak out and meet Rick Riordan
(which I sent an e-mail saying to)
at my library in the section his books are in so I can go
without my mom knowing, just to let you know...

I see a bunch of you are getting into sponser fever. Let me make a couple of rules, here:
You can have a max of two sponsers. Just to keep things fair.
You can recruit sponsers now, but remember that they can't do anything until Chapter 4 (The Challenge begins)
Your sponsers make post(s) saying 'I'm sponsering *Ashley* in Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge. Please like to help *her*!!!'
Every five likes they get, they report to you and you get ONE clue in your next POV. If you get 10 likes, you get TWO clues, etc.
You are also allowed one clue per POV, anyways, so if I got five likes, I would get TWO clues in my next POV. If I got none, I would get ONE.
And here are some story rules:
You cannot Kill or seriously wound someone. Minor cuts, burns, brusing, etc. is allowed.
You can trap people
You will each have a 'Nellie' (Yes, you can name him/her something else) that will be between 22-30-years-old
You can make Alliances throughout the Challenge, but remember, there will be one winner
Post Schedule:
I will post Chapter 2.A On SUNDAY
Chapter 3.A NEXT SUNDAY
Chapter 4.A SUNDAY AFTER THAT
After that, I will start posting my chapter every two weeks. Be sure to notify the peron after you when you post your POV. If they do not post within two days, the person after them can go.

"When were you going to wake up?" she shook her head.
"What do you mean?" I asked
" You have that internship at the library, remember?"
I looked at her blankly when it dawned on me.
"Cinco De Oh My!!!! Oh my teddy bear! Why didn't you wake me up earlier?!?!?!" I shouted
"Well, I know how crabby you get-"
"Ok, ok now move aside....please." I said, somewhat kindly
I tried cramming everything in 5 minutes...which turned to be 10 more than intended.

"I'm here, Mrs. Louvre." I was hyperventilating, like I just had run a mile.
"Where have you been?" she growled.
"Well you see....my car broke down."
"Where?" she asked
"Where? In the middle of the road, that's where," I lied
"Oh you poor thing," she said sarcastically," now go arrange the books."
"Yes madame." I said
"Don't call me that," she said, irked.
"Ok sir," I sneered.
"Excuse me?" she shouted.
"Um I said ok myrrh. Duh." I said as if she wasn't hearing properly.

"Hey Mickey, guess what?" asked my cheerful mom

I woke to find my mother sitting beside me, stroking my forehead. “It was just a dream, its ok.” She said calmly. “Just a dream.” I must have been thrashing around pretty violently for her to come into my room at 5:30 in the morning. “Mum. Go back to bed.” I said still half asleep. Silently she stood up and walked out of the room with fairy-like footsteps. I couldn’t understand how she could be so quiet.
I slowly drifted back to sleep with the thoughts of pitchforks in the back of my mind, but not for long. This happened every time I rose before my usual 7:30am wake up. I couldn’t sleep. Instead, I got up and started to get dressed in my light orange tank top, denim shorts and black jacket. Suddenly I heard a beep from my touch phone. I thought it would have been Liana, my shy but forceful best friend, but to my surprise it was Leo, the guy I liked from school. I quickly tapped into the voice message, and I heard Leo’s deep, clear voice in my ear.
“Hey, um, its Leo here. I, um, was wondering if you wanted to catch a movie today? You, uh, don’t have to go but I’d like you to come, so yeah, um, bye. Oh, and, um, can you call me back? Uh, Please? “
The message ended and a grin spread across my face. I started to dance around my room, feeling as light as a feather, but then my computer screen lit up with an alert. I had a message. Boy I felt popular today! I signed into my email account and clicked into my inbox. Junk mail, an email from Liana titled ‘GUESS WHAT!?’, junk mail, chain mail, a message from Rick Riordan, junk mai- wait a sec! Rick Riordan? He must have written back to my fan email! Yes! Today was turning out to be great! I couldn’t wait to see if he’d answered my question about his favourite colour! I looked at the subject and suddenly had a second thought. What on this Earth was ‘Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge’? Maybe it was a new mission for Arena 39! But wait, why would RickRiordan be emailing this to me? With thoughts buzzing round in my head like a swarm of bees, I opened the message, ready for anything.

From: Rick Riordan
Subject: Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge
I scanned over the message, and this is what it said:

I only knew 3 things.
1. Rick Riordan had not replied to my fan mail.
2. I somehow had to tell Leo I couldn’t come to the movies.
3. I needed to have a serious chat with my dearest mother and father.

William: Chapter 1.
It was 7.30 in the morning and my alarm clock was beeping like crazy! As I got up I looked outside my window. A few crows were on the telephone pole. I was at my uncle's house because I always go there every summer. There was a knock at the door and I said, "Come in."
"It is breakfast time." said my uncle.
"Coming in a minute." I replied,
"I am going to check my email"
"Ok, but be quick"
I turned on the computer and it said, "You have mail." I was excited because I didn't actually get an email that often. I looked at all my messages, my mind just reading the heading until I came across a heading named, Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge.
I clicked it and I saw it was from Rick Riordan.
"Rick Riordan!?"I thought.
I opened it.

Note to Authors: For those of you who didn't get to write your first chapter, you can always say later 'I remember the day when I first got the e-mail...' *Shrugs*
Also: For this chapter, posting order is more important, but not crucial. We're gonna be interacting with each other, but if we can get it all to work, you can post whenever on this one, too. Be sure to try to space out, though. I don't want everyone posting tomorrow :D
REPORTERS: You can begin reporting.
For Monkey and Spence: You guys get to be like TV Co-Anchors. You two can work together and make a little 'show' on here! Basically, explain the contest and give an intro the the contestents.
Gabe: You are in charge of the reporters, so pump them full of ideas! Also, your main job is to take our POV's and shorten them into, like, one paagraph so no one's going 'Whhhhaaaaa?'
ASHLEY: Chapter 2.A
I couldn't believe it. I was standing at the front door of the Scholastic headquarters with a carry-on over my shoulder and a suitcase in my hand, prepared to go on an all-summer challenge for $25,000.
More so; I couldn't believe my mother had let me go. She said that it could never be safe and that I would get hurt. After a long e-mail fight with Mr. Riordan, however, she had said I could go.
Best. Moment. Of. My. Life.
I slowly pushed the door open and listened to it creak as I stepped into the cold building. It was strangely quiet, which worried me a bit. I knew I got the right place...so why were there no other kids here?
I saw a smile sign on the wall that said 'ITG:TUC ->' which I guessed stood for 'Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge'. I followed the signs until I stepped into a large meeting room with 25 chairs set in a circle.
How odd...no one was sitting in any of them.
Odder: Five were green, five were red, five were yellow, five were blue, and five were purple. I got the red, green, yellow, and blue, I just began to worry about the purple.
I stepped into the circle and peered at the chairs. Each had a name on it. 'Vicky, Violet, Emily, Livy, Dracia...' -Dracia was going to be here? How fun it would be to meet her in real life! -'Jason, Joe, Grace, Kurt...' -Names I knew! This was going to be so fun.
I found one - a green one - that read 'Ashley' and smiled. I put my suitcase beside the chair with my carry-on rested in it and looked around. No other kids were here. Still.
"Hey, Early Bird!" a voice caused me to shout, and I turned around to see a bald man with galsses. I raised an eyebrow at him as he stepped closer. "You do know you were supposed to get here at eleven, right?"
I looked down at my watch. 10:25. Oops.
"It's alright. The others will be here in a bit. Some of them got picked up by authors. Others - like you - were close enough to come here by yourself," he said with a slight shrug. "Oops. I forgot to tell you my name. I'm Gordon Korman."
My heart skipped a beat.
He glanced over at the chair with my stuff in it. "You must be Ashley. It's an honor to meet you, Leader." he said with a smile. I felt like some sort of alien until I remembered he was a Janus, at which point my cheeks turned red and I smiled.
"I-it's an honor to meet you, too, sir!" I said quickly, shaking his hand.
He smiled at me again. "I do believe you are the one who asked me if I was a Vesper, right?"
"I didn't know! It was my first post on the Message Board!" I blurted out quickly. "But I'm all good with Vespers, now! I love Grace and Dracia! They're like..."
He put a hand on my shoulder to stop me. "Hey. Between you and me, keep an eye on Lerangis. He's a shady character." he gave me a wink and I felt my cheeks turn red again. "Though I also believe you had to point out to him some problems in The Dead of Night? Well done!"
"Th-thanks!" I said, and I suddenly wondered if I was stuttering like Amy Cahill.
I heard a door close behind me, and a couple of kids walked in. "That must be the second batch!" he shouted over me at them. "Hey, guys! I'm Gordon, and this-" he grabbed he shoulders and spun me around. "-is Ashley!"
I narrowed my eyes slightly as the girl of the duo - a girl about my age with blonde hair - stood agape. "YOU'RE ASHLEY?"
"...Yes...?" I asked softly,
"It's me; Grace!" she shouted, running over to hug me. I began to laugh as loud as I could, hugging her back. I turned to look at the boy. "And...?"
The boy smiled at me. "Don't worry; I'm not gonna hug you to death...but I'm Red."
"Red?" I asked with wide eyes, running over to hug him as well. He, however, let out a cry of protest.
The door opened again and another duo - boy and girl - entered, looking around. I looked at Grace and we both turned to look at the Tall tan Girl and the young boy who was scratching his head.
"Let me guess. Jason -" I began
Grace finished my sentence. "-and Dracia?"
"Yep and Yep!" they said together, running over to hug us.
Within minutes, the room was filled with about twenty kids and several authors, who were all setting up on a stage. Me, Dracia, Grace, Jason, Red, Emily, and Viper had all become a seven-person cult, chatting away in seconds about stuff we normally discussed that would take days on the MB.
We all turned when the door opened a final time, depositing four more kids. One of the boys who had short brown hair instantly looked at us and raised an eyebrow as he made his way over to a red chair.
I smiled. "Well if it isn't Public Enemy No. 1! Get over here, Joe!" I shouted.
He smiled and walked over to us, and after introductions, we continued on in pointess blabbering. After a few minutes, a man walked up on the stage. "I'm guessing Kurt won't be joining us, so it's down to 24."
I heard about a dozen people shout 'HUNGER GAMES!' and then burst into giggles.
I looked at my little group and suddenly felt like one of the Careers in the Hunger Games. If we all allied together, I knew we'd be unbeatable. Sadly, I roll solo, but I'd be more than willing to stab a few backs.
"Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Rick Riordan -" the auditorium got quiet instantly "-and many of you have already met Peter and Gordon." he waved over to two other men standiing beside him, who both waved. Peter was of course wearing a baseball hat, and his height surprised me.
"Welcome to The Ultimate Challenge! This sumer-long competition will be a great and fun experiance for all of you, so be sure to have fun with it! I see many of you are already making alliances-" he was looking at our little group "-which is great. But just like in the 39 Clues books, there can be one winner."
Groans escaped nearly everyone. I smiled. I planned on being that one winner.
"Can everyone please take a seat as we explain the rules?" he asked. I waved 'bye' to my friends as I wandered back over to my seat. "Gift bags are being handed out now, including your money, your passports, and a surprise."
It didn't stay a surprise long. About two seconds later, one of the girls screamed "SHATTERPROOF!!!"
Crys of happiness fill the auditorium as everyone pulled out their copy and began flipping through pages. Peter spoke into his mike. "We figured you guys would want some Road-reading." he winked. I looked over at Gordon and flashed a grin, and I saw him fight back a chuckle.
"As you guys look at your books, we want to go over the rules. First: you were each given only $100. You're personal 'Nellie's' have the rest." A group of young adults - probably between 20-30 - waved at us, and we all waved back. I wondered who was paired up with me...
"Second: I cannot stress this enough; This is not the Hunger Games. There will be no killing. No harming in any serious way. You can trap. You can minor burn, scrape, bruise or slap, but if someone gets seriously hurt, then the person who hurt them is out for good. Understood?"
I nodded along with everyone else.
"We will have some training for you guys over the next week, but nothing will prepare you for the endurance it will take this summer." Rick said, looking completely serious. He then smiled. "Go ahead and meet your Nellie's!"
I smiled and stood, before grabbing the sign taht had my anme and holding it up like a limo driver. A young woman with fiery short red hair and piercing green eyes walked over to me. "Hey, I'm Lexi. I'm your BFF for the summer."

Red: Chapter 2 (Part 1)
I tried to keep my excitement as undetectable as usual, but this time it was hard. Very hard. As I walked through the doors, my Redpuppy Diamond hit against the wall. When I looked back, it was dented. Well, diamond is the hardest thing known to man. But it scared me. It reminded me of how vulnerable we all were, and how one 'accident' could end it all.
My parents were okay with it, after all. They are Ekats, but I'm a Lucian. It's complicated. The Ekats left them to protect an Ekat clue, however they (and the Ekats) didn't know that they were actually born Lucians. The Lucians found out, and recruited me as a Lucian, which was my real branch.
Uncle Rick had explained it all to them anyway, just in case. He was Janus. Another complex branch mix-up. The Ekats thought he was Ekat. He knew he was Janus.
But backstory aside, I couldn't wait. Just as I was going inside, I caught sight of somebody walking along.
'Hey!' He said. 'You here for Ultimate Challenge?'
'Uhh, yeah. Can you tell me where it is?' I asked.
'Just through there.' He pointed through a large set of doors. 'I'm Admin Gavin B.' And he walked off.
I just stared at him. I wondered whether that was going to be the most done thing throughout the whole day, meeting other Message Boarders.
'Hey there!' Said a nervous voice beside me, making me jump. 'I'm Grace.'
'Hey, Grace.' I replied. 'I'm Red. You'll never guess, I just got directions from Admin Gavin B!'
'Woah!' She said. 'Do you think it'll be like this the whole day, meeting other Message Boarders?'
'That's just what I was thinking.'

With Grace, I walked into the room. There were 25 chairs, all different colors, with different names on them. I could see that 'Red' was next to 'Joseph'. Hmm, Joe. This was going to be interesting. Just then, some bald guy turned round. I recognised him as Gordon Korman, my mother's favorite T39C author. Before we came in, he was talking to some other kid. Now who could it be? Gordon spun the kid round violently.
'This,' He said. 'Is Ashley.'
Grace and I just stared, until Grace introduced herself briefly, ran up and hugged her.
'And...?' Ashley asked, turning to me.
I smiled. 'Don't worry; I'm not gonna hug you to death...but I'm Red.'
She ran forward and crushed me.
'Let the man breathe, Ash.' Gordon said.
Suddenly, the door opened.
'Now now.' I said. 'Who on earth could this be?'
All 4 of us turned round. Another 2 kids.
'Let me guess. Jason-' Ashley started.
'-and Dracia?' Grace finished.
'Yep and yep!' They both said, running forward.
And so it went on for the next 10 minutes. People arrived and were immediately swarmed with friends wanting to know more about them. Pretty quickly, Me, Ashley, Dracia, Grace, Jason, Emily and Viper were all jabbering away about random stuff. The door opened one final time. We all knew who it was, except from Emily. We all wanted to meet The Cobra.
'Who is it?' Emily asked.
'Joe. He loves to keep people waiting. He thinks it makes him look important.' I replied.
'And does it?'
'It makes him look late.'
The boy walked around the room, looking rather pleased with all the attention he was getting. He walked around again.
'Yeah, all right Joe, don't milk it.' Shouted William.
'Well, if it isn't Public Enemy No. 1. Get over here, Joe!' Ashley shouted.
I turned to Viper.
'Hey, it's your boyfriend. Looking forward to meeting him?' I mocked.
'Oh, for the last time, shut up about the Egypt RP.' She replied.

"Can everyone please take a seat as we explain the rules?" he asked. I waved 'bye' to my friends as I wandered back over to my seat next to Joe. He didn't lok too happy about the name on his chair being 'Joseph'.
"As you guys look at your books, we want to go over the rules. First: you were each given only $100. You're personal 'Nellie's' have the rest." A group of young adults - probably between 20-30 - waved at us, and we all waved back. I wondered who was paired up with me... Probably some wierd person who couldn't tell the difference between red and yellow.
"Second: I cannot stress this enough; This is not the Hunger Games. There will be no killing. No harming in any serious way. You can trap. You can minor burn, scrape, bruise or slap, but if someone gets seriously hurt, then the person who hurt them is out for good. Understood?"

I held up my sign. Some girl of about 23 wandered over. She looked as cunning as Ian Kabra. Perfect.
'Hey, I'm Ellie.' She said warily. This might not be so hard after all, I thought.

Grace- Chapter 2-
The car ride was amazing so amazing that I slept till we got there. When I woke up the car was stopped and we were sitting in front of the scholastics headquarters. I walked up to the door and noticed a boy standing there. “Hi there. I’m Grace.” The boy jumped a little and then turned around. “Hey Grace. I’m red and you’ll never guess, I just got directions from Admin Gavin B!” He said “Whoa. Do think it will be like this the whole day, meeting other message boarders” We walked in; I saw a man and a girl talking. The man grabbed the girl who looked my age and walked over to us, "Hey guys! I'm Gordon, and this-" He shoved the girl forward, "Is Ashley!" He said. Ashley blushed and my heart almost stopped. Was that really Ashley? The girl I'm bounty buddies with? "YOU’RE ASHLEY?" I asked/yelled. "Yes?" She asked. That stopped me, it really was her. "It's me; Grace!" and I ran up to her giving her a bear hug. She hugged me back laughing. To others it would seem like were long lost friends or sisters but we've never really met each other.
Ashley stopped for a sec and looked at red. "And?" she asked, "Don’t worry, I'm not going to hug you to death...But I'm red." Ashley ran over to him and gave him a hug, He let out a cry of protest before she let go. Then the door opened. 2 people stood there. A girl and a boy. I looked at Ashley and she gave me the same look and together we both turned to look at the Tall tan Girl and the young boy who was scratching his head. “Let me guess. Jason-“Ashley started “And Dracia?” I asked. “Yep and yep!” They said together and ran over and hugged us. Getting so many hugs in one day was making me feel weird no one else seemed to mind. In a couple of minutes the room was filled with kids and teens. There were so many people to talk to and people wanted to talk to me! I felt so special. Then the door opened one more time with the last kids and one boy caught my eye as he walked over to a red chair. That’s when I realized there where different color chairs. “Oh!!! I get it, The Ecats, the Tomas, The Lucians, the Janus, and purple…Vespers? I ran around the room while Ashley was yelling at the Boy, Joe, and I finally found the chair with my name on it. It was purple, Awesome. I walked back over to the little group we had made and Hugged Joe Just to throw him off. That made Viper glare at me. After a few more minutes of talking a man came up on to the stage. The same guy who drove me here. Rick Riordon. “I’m guessing Kurt is not joining us so it’s down to 24.” I instantly Shouted “HUNGER GAMES!!!!” and a lot of other yelled it too. I started to laugh and looked around; this could be the Hunger Games. I started to feel guilty; I would be one of the first murderers. “Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Rick Riordan -" the auditorium got quiet instantly "-and many of you have already met Peter and Gordon." he waved over to two other men standing beside him, who both waved. Peter was of course wearing a baseball hat. "Welcome to The Ultimate Challenge! This summer-long competition will be a great and fun experience for all of you, so be sure to have fun with it! I see many of you are already making alliances-" he was looking at our little group "-which is great. But just like in the 39 Clues books, there can be one winner." I groaned, I knew I would have to hurt people now. I mean, I have to win. I just have to. "Can everyone please take a seat as we explain the rules?" he asked. I sighed and walked over to my purple chair which was next to Dracia and Viper. "Gift bags are being handed out now, including your money, your passports, and a surprise." Rick said and I grabbed mine and peered in. “SHATTERPROOF!!!!” I yelled along with lots of others. "We figured you guys would want some Road-reading." he winked. I smiled; I would read this before the day ended. "As you guys look at your books, we want to go over the rules. First: you were each given only $100. You're personal 'Nellie's' have the rest." A group of young adults - probably between 20-30 - waved at us, and we all waved back. I looked through them. They looked nice. "Second: I cannot stress this enough; this is not the Hunger Games. There will be no killing. No harming in any serious way. You can trap. You can minor burn, scrape, bruise or slap, but if someone gets seriously hurt, then the person who hurt them is out for good. Understood?" He asked. We all nodded. "We will have some training for you guys over the next week, but nothing will prepare you for the endurance it will take this summer." Rick said, looking completely serious. He then smiled. "Go ahead and meet your Nellie's!” I left my bags at my chair and soon found my Nellie. It wasn’t hard because they had sighs with people’s names on them. She was medium height and tan, with long Black hair and brown eyes, glasses and I knew her, “Nicole?” I asked. “Grace! It’s so good to see you again! How long has it been? A year?” She asked and gave me a hug. Nicole was my best friend who was from my church. We both love manga and our games. I returned the hug, I really missed her. “Nicole, how did you get this job? I missed you. Can you drive now?” I asked She smiled “Of course I can drive and I can speak lots of new languages. When we win, do you want to split the money?” She asked me, and then laughed. “I’m joking, we get paid. Now come on. Let’s go to our room for this week.”
