ASHLEY: Chapter 1.A
I should have known the second I woke up that morning that my life was about to be changed forever.
Mainly because it was the second week of summer, and my mom woke me up at seven in the morning.
I groaned as she turned my room's light on, shouting 'Rise and Shine!' as she pulled my blanket off of me. I looked up, glaring at my mother with a look that could kill someone if I really wanted to.
"Ashey! You have that job today, remember?" she said, shaking me back and forth.
My eyes bolted open as I shot up. "THAT'S TODAY?" I screamed, instantly running over to throw on a shirt. My local theater had offered me a job as a teacher's assistant this summer, and it paid $10 an hour; cash I needed if I was saving up to get a car at the end of the summer.
My mother shrugged. "I keep telling you that you need to get a calander." she ruffled my hair as I struggled to pull a pair of shorts on.
"Yes, but I always lose them!" I yelled, running over to get some shoes from my closet.
My mother sighed a grabbed a pair of shoes from under my bed, thrusting them at my chest. "Here's a solution; clean your room."
"I'm waiting until one day when I'm rich and famous and I can pay someone to clean it for me." I said with a wink. My mom let out a giggle before turning around to exit my room.
I walked over to my coin-bank as my mother left and plopped a couple of coins in it. "Only a few hundred more," I said with a smile, writing my new total on my white board.
The next thirty minutes was a whirlwind. I finished getting on my uniform and ate some cereal, then My mom drove me to my job.
I 'worked' for five hours (Even though I felt like I wasn't doing anything except staring at children) my mom came back and picked me up, asking me all sorts of questions about 'how my day was' and stuff.
When I got home, I collapsed on my bed and took a nice, hour-long nap. I didn't know why, exactly I was tired, I hadn't really done anything all day, but nonetheess, the nap felt good.
As I woke up, I yawned and picked up my laptop, realizing I hadn't checked e-mail all day. My inbox was crazy.
Kate: HEY!!!
Kate: Where are you?
Krissy: LOL this is so funny!!!!!
Rick Riordan: Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge.
I raised an eyebrow. Did the 39 Clues e-mails normally say they were from Rick Riordan? And what the heck was 'The Ultimate Challenge'? A new book?
I clicked the e-mail and allowed it to load for a long moment. Slowly, the black text emerged on the white screen.

Dear Ashley (SteelBone2),
Hello. You have been chosen among 24 others from the vast fanbase of The 39 Clues series to compete in a Challenge. The Ultimate Challenge.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Rick Riordan. I am one of the Authors of The 39 Clues series. I know this may all be confusing, so let me break it up for you.
First off, no, this is not a group e-mail. This is personal to you from me. If you want proof, I can tell you that you're Message Board Janus Leader right now.
Secondly, last week on the Message Board, we sent out a poll to every user asking the 25 most popular people. You were one of the voted ones. Congratulations.
Next up, the reason you 25 have been chosen is because many people believe The 39 Clues series is real. Sadly, at the current moment, it's not. You will change that.
You and the other 24 will be taken to one of the Scholastic Headquarters to meet me and some of the other authors in person. There, you all will be given $10,000, each. You will then be sent on an all-summer Challenge to find the 39 Clues scattered all around the world.
The best part? It will all be on television.
No one will be in an alliance. It will be one-on-one. You can make alliances throughout the challenge, but ultimately, there will be one winner.
The winner will earn a nice $25,000 to keep and be mentioned in a 39 Clues book.
Please respond saying if you are able to compete. Thank you, and remember to Trust no one.
Rick Riordan I stared at the e-mail for a long time before I screamed: "MOM!!!"

"Oh, but if you go to school more, then you'll be smarter and get a better job and get lots and lots of money!" I mimicked a high voice in my head.
And I would just stare at them in disbelief, and reflect on the five fights that had happened in the last five weeks, and when the iPad was stolen from the iPad Lab. You see, just because St. Louis is the most dangerous city in the U.S. didn't mean the surrounding, smaller cities were perfect and had a crime rate of 0.0000000000000000000001%. I sat down at my desk for a while, and then went downstairs to get on my laptop. I did the obvious thing, and went to The 39 Clues Message board. I first posted on Hip-Hop and Shakespeare, and then I went on C.O.W.S. I noticed that Emily was going on and on about how she might win $25,000, and how she would buy every One Direction CD ever made, etc. All I got out of it was that Rick Riordan had e-mailed her.
So I thought "What in the world?" and checked my own e-mail. And there it was!

I woke up with my alarm ringing beside my bed. I punched it out of the window and went back to sleep, only to remember that today was the day. The day that I would finally...
'Oh no, that was a dream.' I said to myself. I looked at my watch. It was 7:49. I had to go. I'd slept in. Normally, I'd check my e-mails and texts, but I didn't have time, so I rushed down a breakfast of... nothing much really, and locked the door on my way out. My parents had gone to work, just like every morning. Technically, it was against the law, but round here nobody, not even the police, cared. The Side [Fake name] was a rough place to grow up in, but you got used to it. The average school day involved about 3 fights, most often amongst the teachers. By the age of 12, most people had 2 fake names, 3 fake ages and a criminal record. I didn't have a criminal record, but by the age of 11 I had 5 fake passports, 7 fake ages, 5 fake names and a drivers license.
Many Hours Later
I arrived back home, and turned on the laptop. I had 6 new e-mails:
From: Dominic Subject: Did you see that fight between Mr. M...
From: David Subject: Why did you say no to that...
From: Aidan Subject: Check this out!
From: Ryan Subject: Video of cat running up tree...
From: Lil' Lee Subject: What's your Pottermore user...
From: Uncle Rick Subject: Into The Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge
Uncle Rick was only a distant relative, but he liked to stay in touch. The strange subject caught my eye. Before clicking, I absent-mindedly fingered my ring, a family heirloom and the most priceless of my family's possessions. It was just a normal ring, but on top was a diamond, completely red, yet not a ruby. If you looked closely, you could see a white puppy inside. The Redpuppy diamond. I clicked on the e-mail.

I was bored. no, let me rephrase that, i was on the verge of insanity. my dad was on the antique channel.
"and $250 for this picture of a blah blah blah"
then, i heard the most grateful sound ever. my vesper beep.
"dad, my um... alarm clock just went off, can i please turn it off?"
"ok then, but you'll miss out on this priceless grandfatherclock"
" i think can live with that"
i went to my vesper beeper. its basically whenever i get an email, it sorts it into cahills, vespers, vahills and spam.
this was a cahill. thats weird, i dont usually get cahill messages.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My iPod started ringing. I woke up with a groan and check it. It wsa my best friend Jessica iMessaging me....in 5 in the morning. Is that girl insane? Wait, yes, she is. But that's how we fit. We're insane, and proud of it.
Jessica: Hey
Me: Wat in da world? I have an important test in a couple of hours. Tryna get some sleep here
Jessica: I know, half yearly. Stressin me out 2. Do u no wat invertebrate means again?
Me: Animals without a backbone. Sheesh Jess, we studied this in science da other day!!!
Jessica: I was talkin 2 u instead of listenin. How do you multitask?
Me: I don't even no myself :P. See ya in a couple of hours k?
Jessica: Do u have JB freshener in da car yet?
Me: I told u, the 1 i have now needs 2 wear out!!!!
Jessica: kk, love ya.
Me: Me 2. Cyahzz
Jessica: Cyaah
I put my iPod on my side table and snuggled up in my bed again. After 30 minutes of trying to get to sleep, I faced the horrible fact that I couldn't get to sleep!!! So I did what every other normal person did; go and check my e-mails.
Matea: TALK TO ME!!!!!!
Luke: We need to talk
Jessica: Check your iMessage!!!!
Jenny: Remember, test!!!
I checked on my e-mails, and was receiving a video call on Skype from Luke.
"Hey," was what he said when I accepted.
"How come your up this early?" I asked.
"The big test."
"I KNOW!!! I've been studying for it ever since we got it!!! I'm thinking I'm gonna ace it though."
"Awesome. Listen, we've been friends for a long time-"
"Yeah, so?" I asked, curious. Just then I got another video chat request on Skype. "Hold your thought Luke, someone else wants to talk to me."
"But this is important-"
"It's my cousin overseas. How about I see you at school?" I asked.
"Sure," he said, but was very disappointed.
"Bye," I said, and hung up on him. I accepted my cousins video chat request, and it wasn't who I thought it was....it was a guy called Luka, who also happened to be my friend. I cracked up laughing!!!!
"What's with you?" he asked.
"I was just talking to a guy called Luke," I said, and he also joined in.
"Listen, I know you have to go to school right now and stuff, but Karlo really misses you," Luka said.
"I know...I just don't feel the same way," I replied. This guy called Karlo was in my class when I was in year 3, but I had to move away in year 4. He developed feelings for me in less then a year, but I didn't feel the same way.
"Ok. I'l tell him that you said your not interested," Luke said.
"No!!!! Don't break his heart!!!!" I shouted. "Look, I have to go now. School....can be bad. Cyah," I said.
"Bye," he said and I signed off from Skype. I started researching, and found out some interesting facts about science that I hoped would be in the test. Speaking of school, I checked the time and nearly fainted. I WAS GONNA BE LATE FOR THE MOST IMPORTANT TEST OF MY ENTIRE LIFE!!!!! I got dressed, took an apple, grabbed my bag and check in the mirror. I did my hair and off I was to school in.
*A couple of hours later*
I was walking home, and someone was calling my name. I turned around and it was Luke. Of course it was.
"Hey," he heaved.
"Looks like you had a bad day," I said, looking at his appearance. He looked like a mess.
"I know. The test was a big deal for me. I think I aced it though. Those memorising tips you gave me though were really helpful. Thanks," he thanked me.
"No worries. Remember when we first met? We hated each others guts," I said, recalling the days.
"I know!!! We would keep pissing each other off!!!"
"Yeah. Those were the days," I sighed. We walked quietly, enjoying the view. Suddenly, my phone beeped.
"Did you text anyone?" Luke asked me.
"No... It's a notification from my e-mail account," I replied, and opened it up. I had a iPhone 4S, but of course, I had to work to get what I wanted. I checked who sent it to me, and nearly fainted.
"OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!" I shouted, and Luke grabbed my right arm when he saw my legs giving way.
"What?" he asked.
"I just got an e-mail from one of my all-time favourite book authors!!!! EEEKKKK!!!!" I shouted, jumping up and down. If anyone passed us then, they would've thought I was a lunatic.
"Well, what does it say?" Luke asked, surprisingly interested.
"Here," I said, and put the phone inbetween us. We both read what it said.
Secondly, I can tell you that you write an exceptional story called The Adventures of 8 Cahills. How is that romance coming along? Oh wait, I should not spoil it.
Lastly, I can also tell you that you hang out on this page called COWS and it stands for Cahills Outstanding Writers and Singers. I can not wait to hear your amazing voice. After all, you are a Janus.
Next topic, the reason you 25 have been chosen is because many people believe The 39 Clues series are real. Sadly, at the moment, it isn't. You will change that.
You and the other 24 will be taken to one of the Scholastic Headquarters to meet me and some of the other authors in person. There, you all will be given $10,000 each. You will then be sent on an all summer Challenge to find The 39 Clues scattered around the world.
The best part? It will all be on television.
No one will be in an alliance. It will be one-on-one. You can make alliances throughout the challange, but ultimately, the will be one winner.
The winner will earn a nice $25,000 to keep and be mentioned in a 39 Clues book.
Please respond saying if you are able to compete. Thank you, and remember to Trust No One.
When we finished reading, we were dumbstruck.
"HOLY SMOKES!!!! YOU CAN GET $10,000 DOLLERS!?!?!" Luke asked me.
"Well it sure seems like it!!!!!" I shouted back excitedly. We both couldn't stop jumping. We both read those series, so he went to check his phone. He hadn't gotten a e-mail from Rick Riordon.
"Sorry," I apologised, noticing the disappointment on his face.
"It's alright. Don't worry about me. What we need is to focus on you. Are you gonna enter?"
"Well....it's a good bargain. But what about the tests?"
"HELLO!??!!? Your an intelligent person!!! You can easily catch up on the work you'll miss out. Hello? Earth to Emzz. YOUR GONNA BE ON TELEVISION!!!"
"But-"
"No but's. You need to do it. It's your destiny."
"Thanks Luke. Your right!!! I'm gonna do it. The next time you see me, I'll be living the life," I said smiling, and gave him a hug. "Thanks!!!"
"GOOD LUCK!!!" Luke shouted, and I ran home. I responded to Rick's e-mail, and went on The 39 Clues. I did what every person in the world would do, brag. I went on the COWS page and ranted on about how I was gonna become rich and use that money to somehow get VIP tickets to meet One Direction and buy every little piece of merchandise they have. I would also give to charity. If I don't...well, karma comes around. Just then, I heard a knock on the door. I pressed 'submit' and closed my laptop. I ran to the door, and opened it. There stood Rick Riordan himself, and I could feel my heartbeat racing faster and faster. I felt a gigantic smile cross my face, and I couldn't hold it in.
"Shall we?" Rick asked, and I nodded.
"Just as soon as I pack my things," I said and ran back inside.
"MAKE YOURSELF COMFORTABLE!!!!!" I shouted, and packed my things in 10 minutes. I raced back downstairs, and suddenly realised something. What will my parents think? They were on an anniversary vacation thing, and I stayed behind.
"What about-"
"Your issue with your parents had been sorted. They're letting you go," Rick cut me off, like he knew exactly what I was thinking. It was creepy, but cool.
"So, what are we waiting for?" I asked, and we headed towards his limousine. I couldn't hold in my gigantic smile.
I had a feeling that today was going to be different from the outher's. I got out of bed still wearing my jammies, and walked to my computer.
I turned it on and looked at my emails
From: Abbey Subject: Did you see the new Nicki Minaj.......
From: Logan Subject: New street Hockey players.........
From: J.P Subject: Detriot Red wings are better than Pittsburgh.......
From: Rick Riordan Subject: Into the Gauntlet: The untimate challenge
I looked at that last E-mail. Did Rick Riordan really email me? I opened the E-mail and read it
Secondly, on the Message Board last week, we sent out a poll to every user asking the 25 most popular people. You were one of the voted 25. Congrats. I went on to the 39 clues wrot some POV's and then got dressed. I called up my parents to see if it was ok "hi mom!" I said m parents where in an other state for a vaction and i was stuck with my BFF Abbey for the summer "hi sweety, whats up?" I took a deep breath. and told her about the e-mail "send me the email," my mother replyed back "ok, here i just sent it." There was a moment where we didn't talk "alright you can go." I jumped up and down "thanks mom!" I went downstairs..... only to meet eyes with a stranger "who are you?" I said getting into a fighting stance "Lerangis..... Peter Lerangis."
on Emily's post. I read what she had to say and my eyes grew increasingly wide. NO WAY!! She was saying that she got an email from Rick Riordan and that she was going on a clue hunt! All of a sudden a post from David popped up. I read:
Hey everyone!!! I just got an email from Rick Riordan!!!!!!!!!! :DI quickly opened another tab and checked my email.
David- Hey guess what I got?!?! Didn't need to open that one, I thought.
Whitney- Pool Party on Saturday!
Courtney- Wanna hang out??
Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero. How could there not be an email from Rick Riordan??? I turned off my computer, too bummed to congratulate David and Emzz. I walked into the kitchen. Dragging my feet I grabbed the cereal, a bowl, the milk, and sat down at the table. I sighed loudly.
"Don't look so happy, Sunshine." my mom commented.
"I didn't get an email..."
"Really? Usually you have tons of emails."
"I have emails, just not the one I wanted."
"I'm sorry honey." She said giving me a hug. "Life goes on though."
"Hmph."
"Finish eating your breakfast. You don't want to ruin your perfect attendance record." She warned.
I finished eating and headed out to my bus stop. David was already there.
"Did you get my email?" He asked excitedly.
"Yep. I also saw your post on the MB. Congratulations." He gave me a funny look.
"What's your deal?"
"I'm bummed I didn't get an email! Happy?" I scowled.
"No. It would be cool if you were in it too!"
"I'm sorry, I should be happy for you." I sighed. "Congrats! You'll do great!"
"Maybe your email is just a little late!" He said. That's David, I thought, always looking on the optamistic side of things. The school bus pulled up and we got in. Little did I know that that was the last time things would be "normal" for a while.
**********
That night I logged into my email to reply to everyone. I was about to click on Whitney's, when I saw I had a new one in my inbox. I looked at the sender and knocked my chair over as I jumped for joy. I had gotten the email!!!!!
I stared at my computer. My friend Sammy was supposed to email me any minute now. My eyes were starting to get sore. I rubbed them and stood up. Just then the computer dinged three times.
Wow, I thought. Three emails at the same time? Sheesh, that never happens. My inbox said:
Whoa. Rick Riordan? He had my email? Holly would flip if she knew that. I clicked on it. It read:
From: Rick Riordan
Subject: Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge
Dear Kelly (AmethystChurch2),
Secondly, last week on the Message Board, we sent out a poll to every user asking the 25 most popular people. You were one of the voted ones. Congratulations.
I gasped. Then: “Mom! Come here! I just got the most exciting email!”
My mother walked into the room. “Did you get another email from that People to People organization? If you did, tell them thanks, but no thanks.”
“Mom, no, this is from Rick Riordan. Read it, read it!”
My mom quickly read the email. “Hmm. I’ll have to ask your father.”
“But Dad’s going to say no!”
“If he says no, then the answer is no,” said my mom. “And that’s final.”
I am happy. After much speculation, I can go.
Isabel's POV
I sit in the limosuine, crusing down the highway. A driver in a black suit and tie is seated next to the one and only Rick Riordan, who came to pick me up. I go through the day's events in my head, trying to make sense of everything...
It was around 10:00 a.m., when I was randomly checking my e-mail. I got a bunch of the normal e-mails from my friends, until I happened to scroll down to an e-mail marked; Into the Gauntlet: The Ultimate Challenge. It was from Rick Riordan, and in reading it, I couldn't believe my eyes. He knew everything, from my alias (CatCommando) and lots of other secrets. Was this real, or just some other prank? Well, the answer to that came soon when Rick Riordan actually CAME to my house and asked if I was ready to go. Of course, my parents weren't home. To sum it up, I don't have any parents. I've only got a guardian, who's name is Aurora. She is the best guardian you could ever have, considering the fact that she lets me do anything, literally. When Rick Riordan came, I asked if Aurora could come along, because he said that we should each have a guardian to watch over us (at least he told me that.) Anyways, I was told that I was the first person to be picked up. And so that brings me to where I am now, cruising on a limosuine going to pick up the next Cahills.
Shaking my head, I am still in disbelief. Other Cahills are piled around me, some boys, and some girls. All of them though, have that Cahill look in their eyes, the determination to get what they want. I shiver. This contest is going to be a lot harder than I thought.
To be continued... (TBC)...
