Hey guys, Madellin here. I'm writing a story for school, but I want your opinion. I'll write the first chapter, then I'll see if you like it. I don't want anyone to criticize, but if you spot a mistake, or know how to make my writing excel, then post a comment! Thanks!
Here goes:
Chapter one
Panting and out of breath, Kale Frost ran to a nearby ally. It was dark and narrow, but she had no choice. With every step she took, the squeal of the black van behind seemed to get closer. The van was too big to go through the ally. Men in black came out, running toward her. She turned and put my hands in front of her, aiming at the van. Ice shot out, making a wall between her and the men. But bullets were shooting through it, and the wall broke. Kale turned and began running again.
She ducked to a wall and made sure she camouflaged in the dark. She held my breath as the men ran past her. She closed her eyes with relief and leaned back on the wall. She gripped her silver locket around her neck.
The events of these past few days really changed her life. And it was only because of her powers.
The hunt started a few days ago, after the ‘Hunters’ knew she actually existed. The Hunters were an organization that hunts down people like her. They’ve decreased our numbers until they were very few. Many of them went into hiding much after. They chased them out of their homes, away from their family, just to capture or kill them.
Kale closed her eyes, tears falling down her face. She remembered Anna, her little sister. Kale tucked her dark hair behind her ears. She was the only one in her family who had these powers.
She thought of the Hunters. What would they do if they caught me? Kale froze, terrified of the thought. Would they experiment on her, like she was some animal? Or would they keep her locked up, not seeing anyone ever again?
Thinking, she was about to drift off to an exhausted sleep when she heard a faint rustle behind her. Before she could react, a quick hand slid over her waist, clamped a hand to her mouth, and the next thing she knew she was plunged into darkness.

Chapter eight
Kale knocked loudly on her door. She was over-excited about seeing her family again. Even if it was only six days, it seemed like they were apart for years. Finally, someone opened the door. A girl, about fourteen, opened the door. She had similar dark hair that resembled Kale’s, but her eyes were a sandy shade of green.
“May I help you?” She asked glumly. Kale cried out, embracing her in a hug.
“Anna! It’s so good to see you again!” Kale said, overjoyed. Recognizing her sister’s voice, her eyes widened.
“Kale?” She gasped. Kale pulled away from her, nodding, smiling brightly. Tears welled into her eyes. “Mom, dad! Come here!” She yelled. A middle aged man and women came running to the door. But before they could utter a word, Kale threw her arms around them, weeping loudly.
“It’s Kale,” Anna whispered, also tearing up. The woman gasped, looking at her daughter.
“Kale! What are you doing here?! It’s dangerous! I—” She stopped, looking at Annabel and Leo.
“Who are they?” Kale’s father asked. Kale blushed slightly. She forgot they were there after the little reunion.
“Mom, dad, Anna, this is Annabel and Leo.” She gestured toward them. “And guys, this is my family.”
Leo smiled. “We figured.” He held out his hand to Kale’s father.
“I’m Leo Montez.”
“Annabel Lane,” She shook hands with Kale’s mother. “Nice to meet you, ma’am.”
Kale’s mother smiled. “Call me Cyren. This is my husband, Lucas.” She pointed to her youngest daughter. “And my daughter, Anna.” Lucas, Kale’s father, stepped away from the door.
“Come in, have a seat.” Leo, Annabel, and Kale came inside. Kale’s excitement was now replaced with calmness and relief. She longed to go back home the second she unwillingly departed. Kale sat down on a couch beside her sister, and Leo and Annabel pulled up a chair. Cyren, Kale’s mom, smiled. She looked at Leo.
“Does he...Have an ability, too?” She asked gently. Kale nodded. Then she said; “But Annabel just saved us from getting caught.”
“We thank you,” Kale’s father said. Cyren took in a deep breath.
“Kale, you came just in time. If you didn’t come, we wouldn’t know a way to tell you important news.”
Kale’s smile vanished, and at once she sat up straighter. “What news? What’s wrong?”
“On the news, the ‘Hunters’ put up your picture. And that gentleman’s, too.” Kale’s father said. “But in the background, we saw someone who could use abilities like yours’. But he was helping them. The Hunters are using your kind to hunt you down.”
Kale’s spray-tanned skin seemed to look pale. “But...What if he was forced to?”
Cyren shook her head. “We don’t know. But what we do know is that you can’t stay here for long,”
Leo spoke. “So we have to stay hidden,” Both parents nodded grimly.
“Just to be safe, you need new names.”
Kale thought for a moment. “Jill Parker,”
“Carter,” Leo said thoughtfully. “Carter West,” Kale could tell he was thinking of his former friend. There was a silence for a moment, but then Kale’s mother got up.
“You guys must be famished. I’ll prepare something to eat. Meanwhile, you guys can just sit and relax.”

Chapter nine
Annabel tugged the small blanket over her chin. The clock on the wall was ticking loudly, hardly letting her fall asleep. Finally, she gave up. The windows beside her let in dim light from the moon, the hushed air making her feel calm. She sighed softly. Kale was sleeping in her room, her sister beside her. Leo was in the guest room, sound asleep. Annabel insisted on taking the couch. It wasn’t her place to complain, she was grateful for having a place to sleep for the night.
Annabel owned a small apartment, but she was late on the rent. She didn’t tell Kale or Leo that she was practically broke. But just ten hours ago, Kale and Leo changed her life starting with a makeover. Annabel’s thoughts were cut off by voices. She immediately pretended to be asleep.
“Cyren, I know we have to keep her safe. But we also have to keep Anna safe, too. We don’t even know if we’re being watched right now.” It was Kale’s father. Kale’s mother’s voice was breaking, slowly rising.
“Listen to what you’re saying, Lucas! This is our daughter we’re talking about! And if I have to protect her with every last breath in my body, so be it.” Her voice was muffled. Annabel guessed Lucas pulled her for a hug.
“You’re right. I’m sorry for speaking that way.” He paused, then he added. “If Kale’s friends are important to her too, then we protect them as well.”
Annabel smiled to herself. And at that, she finally fell asleep.

Something nudged Annabel awake. She opened her eyes, expecting to see the lavender paint on her apartment room’s walls, but instead she saw Anna, her gold flecked green eyes bright.
“It’s time for breakfast,” She said shyly. Annabel smiled.
“Thanks. I’ll be up in a minute.” Anna nodded, going back to the kitchen. Annabel softly yawned and got up from the couch, smoothing her borrowed pajamas. Kale lent her some of her clothes before they went to sleep. Annabel trudged up the stairs, to Kale’s room. She knocked. Kale’s voice sounded.
“In a sec!” After three minutes, she opened the door. She wasn’t wearing her disguise, so her black hair waved around her shoulders freely.
“Morning, Kale. Did you see where my clothes are?” Annabel asked. Kale smiled, her ice blue eyes twinkling.
“You’re borrowing more of mine. Whether you like it or not.” Kale said, pulling her into her room. Twenty minutes later, Annabel was staring at herself in the full length mirror. She wore light blue skinny jeans with a white blouse. It was the finest thing she’s ever seen. She gave Kale a small hug.
“Thanks so much,”
“You’re more than welcome. I’ll be downstairs, okay?” Kale headed out the door.
“Okay!” Annabel called out to her. She smoothed her spiky blond hair into waves. After she was satisfied, she skipped down the stairs to the dining room. Leo was next to Kale’s father, and Kale was in between Anna and her mother. Annabel shyly sat beside Kale’s father. But the shyness went away as soon as she saw the pancakes, hot bread, and cinnamon rolls on the table, steaming. Anna and her father immediately helped themselves, followed by Kale, Annabel, and Kale’s mother. After a moment, they looked expectantly at Leo. He smiled softly, then said;
“It’s alright. I’m not hungry. Excuse me.”
Leo got up from his chair and opened the slide-glass door to the garden.

Chapter ten
Leo was walking hurriedly through the garden, upset with himself. He shouldn’t have agreed to go with Kale to her parent’s house. It hurt too much. He over-heard Kale’s parents argue last night. It made him see the difference between Kale’s parents and his. His own mother was afraid of him. But when Kale’s parents spoke of him and Annabel, protecting them seemed like asking for too much. Who knows how much danger they’re in, anyway?
He heard running footsteps behind him. He turned, expecting to see Kale or Annabel. But instead, it was Kale’s father, Lucas. Leo began apologizing automatically, but Lucas silenced him.
“It’s okay to be upset,” Was his only words. Leo was dumbfounded. How did he know? As if an answer to his thoughts, Lucas said;
“I saw it in your eyes, Leo. You were just like me when I was your age. My parents left me in an orphanage.”
Leo bit his lip. It was worse for your parents to leave you then you leaving on your own.
“I’m sorry,” Leo murmured. Lucas put a hand on his shoulder.
“Kale told her mother and I about you last night. About letting her stay with you, escaping in the tunnel. I wanted to thank you for taking care of my little girl.” He was smiled. Leo didn’t speak, so he continued.
“Kale never really had any good friends until she met you. It was our fault though, her mother and I. We had to move ever year to a new house to make sure they weren’t after her.”
Leo felt his heart spread with warmth. He didn’t need people that didn’t care about him. The true meaning of family was people you love and care about deeply.
“Thank you, sir.” Leo said, his eyes bright. Kale’s father smiled.
“Thank you, Leo. And call me Lucas.” He said. Leo chuckled. Just then, they heard something crash distantly. Someone screamed. And at once, Leo and Lucas ran to the house.

Chapter eleven
Kale pushed Annabel, her mother, and her sister behind her. Three armed Hunters were a few feet away from them, standing in front of a huge gap they made on the wall. Kale put her hands in front of her.
“I’m giving you three seconds, exactly three seconds to get your murdering selves out of my house,” Kale threatened. The Hunters showed no fear. Instead, one of them stepped forward. Kale braced herself while her mother grabbed a rolling pin, and Annabel grabbed a vase, ready to smash it on someone’s head. The one who stepped closer took off his glasses in a swift move.
At once Kale recognized him. He was the one chasing her and Leo down the tunnel.
Royce, his name was. Leo. Kale thought. Where’s my father? Where’s Leo? As if on cue, Leo burst through the slide glass door along with her father...holding an M1 Garand Rifle? He trudged toward Royce, who kept a keen eye on him. Kale’s father raised the gun to Royce’s face.
“I want you to stay away from my family.” He threatened. Kale felt a little warmth in her body, knowing her father also meant Leo and Annabel.
“We don’t want any violence,” Royce said calmly. “We only need to take two people and we’ll be on our way.”
Anna, holding a cooking knife, came up to Royce, her head almost reaching his shoulders before any of them could stop her. She grabbed at his collar and pulled him lower so that they were face to face.
“Over my dead body,” She whispered fiercely. Then, dozens of things happened at once. Kale grabbed her sister and pulled her back, but Royce caught her wrist. Leo immediately rushed forward and pushed him away. The two other men behind Royce stepped into the fight, trying to grab at Kale or Leo. Kale’s mother grabbed the back of Kale and Leo’s clothes to pull them back. She stuffed keys into Leo’s hand.
“Take this,” She yelled. “Get out of here! Run!”
Before Kale could answer, her mother swung the rolling pin into one of the Hunters’ head, and fell, unconscious. Royce took out a phone.
“Send backup! They’re going to escape!” He yelled into the phone. Kale’s mother pushed her daughter out of the door, along with Annabel and Leo.
“But, mom—”
“We’ll be okay!” She gave Kale a quick kiss on her forehead.
“Now, go!” They all turned, running into the sports car they were going to give Kale for her nineteenth birthday.

Kale’s mother grabbed the back of Kale and Leo’s clothes to pull them back. She stuffed keys into Leo’s hand.
“Take this,” She yelled. “Get out of here! Run!”
Before Kale could answer, her mother swung the rolling pin into one of the Hunters’ head, and fell, unconscious. Royce took out a phone.
“Send backup! They’re going to escape!” He yelled into the phone. Kale’s mother pushed her daughter out of the door, along with Annabel and Leo.
“But, mom—”
“We’ll be okay!” She gave Kale a quick kiss on her forehead.
“Now, go!” They all turned, running into the sports car they were going to give Kale for her nineteenth birthday.

Hey, Madeline. I'm not sure if you recognize my agent card or the font and color I always use, but in case you don't, as of now I'm the runner up in the Writing Contest. I didn't bother to check out the other stories because I was too selfish. But, I thought to myself, everybody is voting for this Madeline person, her story must be pretty rockin. So, I decided to check it out. And, I don't give out compliments lightly, this story is more than rockin. It's fantastic! LivelyJade1 would probably love this story more than she loves mine (I'm not bragging, because I asked her to read it)! As she would probably say, "It's utterly fantastic!" You definitely deserve to win the writing contest. Being the runner up is fine with me. I'm just honored to have made it to this round and being matched up against your story. Chapter twelve
Leo was already in the driver’s seat, starting the car. He could already hear sirens of the Hunters’ cars coming closer. Kale dove to the passenger seat, and Annabel strapped her seatbelt in the back. Without warning, Leo pressed on the gas pedal as hard as he could. The car was flying into the streets. On the corner of his eye, the window’s scenery was blurring past. But he only concentrated on the distant sirens.
“We need to go some place deserted! We don’t want to hurt anyone!” Kale shouted so Leo could hear her over the car honks and shouts. Leo nodded once. He turned to the highway to get out of town. He looked at the rear-view mirror and saw a black jeep speeding after them. He drove faster, almost losing control over the car. Finally, there were cornfields and forests in sight, and there weren’t many cars. Suddenly, the clear blue sky began to change. Gray clouds started to form, and the wind was howling through the car’s windows. The black jeep wasn’t anywhere in sight. Leo stepped on the breaks, and the car skidded to a halt, drifting. They all looked behind them to see a tornado the size of a tidal wave heading toward them.
“Drive!” Annabel screamed. “Drive the freaking car!”
Leo jammed his aching foot on the gas pedal with fear. Kale was terrified as well, but something was nudging at her. Telling her to turn back.
“Wait!” She yelled. “Turn around!” But Leo didn’t obey.
Annabel screamed; “Are you crazy?! There’s a tornado and your telling us to turn around?!”
“Don’t you remember what my mom said?! ‘The Hunters’ are using your kind to hunt you down’!”
Leo’s wild green eyes turned slightly thoughtful. Then he drifted, turning the car around, toward the tornado. Annabel screamed. Kale narrowed her eyes when they got closer.
“Stop the car!” She ordered, her eyes widening. The car immediately came to a halt. Kale opened the door, the wild wind blowing her hair out of her face. But she ran toward the tornado, the figure’s body getting bigger and bigger. His hands were above his head, controlling the winds. His spiky white-blonde hair was blowing rapidly, but the tornado didn’t seem to move his body. Even from fifty feet away, Kale could make out his stormy gray eyes. But as he noticed Kale, his hands lowered, the wind dying. Kale suddenly felt light headed, feeling the need to hold on to something. She shook her head. Speeding always made her feel dizzy. She got closer to the young boy, who looked no more than nineteen or twenty. He was staring at her suspiciously.
“You’re her,” He said. “The one I’m looking for. Where’s the other one?”
Kale didn’t answer. I was right, she thought. He’s one of the Hunters.
“Kale!” Leo yelled behind her. She turned, but a little too fast. She felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. Leo saw her and immediately put a hand on her shoulder to steady her. Annabel soon caught up, looking red faced with tire and anger.
“I’m afraid you’re all going to have to come with me,” The white haired boy said.
“And I’m afraid that’s not gonna happen,” Annabel snapped. They heard sirens in the distance. The white haired boy almost looked pleading.
“Please, make this easier on the both of us.” He said. Kale now understood. He was forced to do this.
“If you come with us, then we can defeat the Hunters. You should use your powers for helping your own kind, not going against them,” She said calmly.
His steel gray eyes bored into Kale’s. “I wish deeply that I could help you. But they have someone very important to me.”
The sirens were getting closer, and now Kale was panicking. Without thinking, she burst out;
“What if we make it seem like we’re taking you against your will? They wouldn’t hurt the person you care about if we did!” Leo looked at Kale.
“Are you sure?”
She nodded impatiently.
The white haired boy finally spoke. “I’m sorry. But I can’t take the risk.”

@Grace: I'll tell Aiden you said that. He's kinda asleep. He's getting better, thank God. And I'm thanking you for praying for him. Anyway, here's another part of the story:
Chapter thirteen
As the black jeeps got closer, the sirens grew louder. Leo spread his hands to summon roaring fire, surrounding Kale, Annabel, the boy, and himself. The Hunters couldn’t some through fire one hundred feet high. Kale looked uncomfortable; she was used to the coldness of her ice. The white-haired boy scowled, and then raised his own hands.
“You’ve left me no choice,” Winds were coming at them in all directions, but it didn’t burn out the fire. The boy seemed enraged.
“Skye!” A Hunter yelled from behind the fire. “Get away from there! Fall back!”
Skye didn’t answer. Instead, with a movement with his hand, a forceful wind wrapped tightly around Kale, pulling her higher into the air. Kale screamed, but her voice was muffled.
“Let her go!” Leo commanded. Kale was struggling in the air, trying to move. Leo blew his fire toward the boy, Skye, so he could drop Kale. Skye cried out, dropping his hands to shield himself with the winds. Kale was falling, screaming loudly. Leo caught her just a moment before she smashed into the street. She held onto him tightly, in shock.
But from behind Skye, Annabel snuck behind him and caught his arm. She twisted it behind his back. He cried out.
“Skye! Fall back!” The Hunter yelled again. Leo let go of Kale and she ran to Annabel and seized Skye’s arm, putting one hand to his neck. Kale gave Leo a brief look. He nodded, then put up one open hand, then clenched his fist. The fire evaporated, along with the smoke and ashes.
The Hunters were about to come forward, but Kale shouted; “Stop right there!” They obeyed, staring at either Kale or Skye. She put her arm around Skye’s neck, motioning Annabel to go back with Leo.
“Drop your weapons!” She shouted. They hesitantly lowered their weapons; stun guns and electrical guns.
“Get in your car!” They stood still, looking unsure.
“Get into the car, you fools!” Sky yelled; his steel-gray eyes wild.
“Now!” She yelled. They sprinted into the car. Without turning around, Kale dragged Sky to the sports car behind them. Leo opened the door to stuff Skye inside. Annabel was beside him, tying his hands. Even a hundred feet away, Annabel could see the Hunter’s raging faces. Kale climbed into the passenger seat, and Leo turned on the car. He didn’t drive as fast before, but just enough to see the Hunter’s jeep become a small spec in the distance. Kale, Leo, and Annabel were smiling in relief. Annabel started to untie Skye’s hands. Kale turned to face him, her ice blue eyes bright with excitement. “That was pretty good acting,” She commented.
“Thanks. You weren’t so bad yourself,”

Chapter fourteen
Skye knew sign language; his father was deaf. He took his chances to tell the three that there was a listening device clipped on his body in sign language. If he talked, then the leader of the Hunters would know exactly what he was saying, and the people around him.
Annabel also knew the language; her little sister was deaf as well. They both exchanged ideas until they finally agreed to fake Skye’s kidnapping. Then the person the Hunters are holding captive won’t get hurt.
Leo was driving the car to an abandoned farm, sometime that night. They couldn’t go to a hotel; they don’t have their disguises. Everyone was silent, exhausted with today’s event. Leo turned right and hid the car behind tall bushes.
“Come on, guys. Let’s get out.” Leo said, opening the door. He opened the door for Kale, who was practically asleep. He softly touched her arm.
“Kale,” He said gently. Kale’s eyes flew open.
“Sorry,” She murmured, getting out of the car. Annabel and Skye were already out, waiting for them in front of the chipped wooden door. Leo was half supporting Kale to walk. As they stood in front of the farm, Annabel looked slightly uncomfortable. Skye shrugged.
“Better than what I get back at my cell.” He opened the door. Inside the farm were piles of hay and stables. It was empty of life except for a few rats scurrying under the floorboards. Skye went immediately toward one of the hay piles, smoothed the top, and laid on it without another word. The others followed, soon resting on their pile. Kale slept immediately, sleeping dreamlessly.

The Hunters’ leader was smiling to himself grimly. Skye’s been taken. He knew there was a listening device sewn on his jacket, and his ‘captors’ destroyed it. But there was one little thing Skye didn’t know about, ruining their genius plan. When he was captured, the Hunters placed a tracking device into his left shoulder.
Skye was kidnapped, yes. But he wasn’t the only elemental working for him.
