Here goes:
Chapter one
Panting and out of breath, Kale Frost ran to a nearby ally. It was dark and narrow, but she had no choice. With every step she took, the squeal of the black van behind seemed to get closer. The van was too big to go through the ally. Men in black came out, running toward her. She turned and put my hands in front of her, aiming at the van. Ice shot out, making a wall between her and the men. But bullets were shooting through it, and the wall broke. Kale turned and began running again. She ducked to a wall and made sure she camouflaged in the dark. She held my breath as the men ran past her. She closed her eyes with relief and leaned back on the wall. She gripped her silver locket around her neck. The events of these past few days really changed her life. And it was only because of her powers. The hunt started a few days ago, after the ‘Hunters’ knew she actually existed. The Hunters were an organization that hunts down people like her. They’ve decreased our numbers until they were very few. Many of them went into hiding much after. They chased them out of their homes, away from their family, just to capture or kill them. Kale closed her eyes, tears falling down her face. She remembered Anna, her little sister. Kale tucked her dark hair behind her ears. She was the only one in her family who had these powers. She thought of the Hunters. What would they do if they caught me? Kale froze, terrified of the thought. Would they experiment on her, like she was some animal? Or would they keep her locked up, not seeing anyone ever again? Thinking, she was about to drift off to an exhausted sleep when she heard a faint rustle behind her. Before she could react, a quick hand slid over her waist, clamped a hand to her mouth, and the next thing she knew she was plunged into darkness.

Kale kicked and grunted, trying to break free from her attacker’s grasp. She couldn’t summon her powers because her hands were held together. The attacker yanked her inside a dark room. “Stop kicking! I’m only helping you!” The attacker said. It sounded like a young man. He let Kale go, and she whirled around, facing him. She braced herself, putting my hands in front of her. “Who are you?” Kale demanded. His pale green eyes widened as he put his hands in front of him, as if to defend himself. “Wait. I’m just like you!” He exclaimed. Kale almost believed him, but this could be a trick. And she wasn’t taking any chances. “Prove it,” She said. The boy held out his tanned hand, and fire flamed on his hand, dancing in place. It lit up the room. Kale put her hands down hesitantly. “I’m Leo. Leo Montez. I only brought you here because they were chasing you,” He said, putting a hand through his auburn hair. Kale glared at him with her ice blue eyes. “Karoline Frost. I like to be called Kale,” She said after a while. He held out his hand. Kale shook it. “Nice to see there’s someone like me.” He said. “They’re chasing you, too?” She asked, finally relaxing. He nodded. Kale took a look around the room. There was a bed and a fridge on one side, backpacks and stacks of papers on the other. “You live here?” Kale asked, walking toward the papers. They had dates and pictures of far-off places. “Yes,” He said. “You can stay for a while, too…If you want” He offered. Kale looked up at him and smiled. “Thanks, but I’d rather not,” She said. His face fell a little. “Why not?” “If they find me, you’d be in trouble,” Kale said. “I already put many lives of people in my hands. Including my family,” He nodded, understanding. He did seem upset, though. “But if you don’t mind, may I spend the night?” She asked. He looked up and smiled. “Sure. I’ve never had company in a while,”

Chapter three
Leo was happy that Kale was staying overnight; he never met someone like him after his best friend, Carter. Leo shook his head, trying not to think about a distant memory. He was making dinner while Kale set the small round table. Leo cut vegetables into small pieces, thinking of Carter. He didn’t realize he cut himself until he saw blood. Leo didn’t know how, but Kale knew he was bleeding. She was beside him in a flash. Kale took his hand. “You okay?” She asked, while his hand glowed. It took a moment, but his hand stopped glowing. There wasn’t a scar, much less a cut on his hand. “How did you do that?” Leo asked, flexing his hand. Kale shrugged. “Just something I can do. Water heals, I guess,” She said. She took the food and put it on the table. “Thanks,” Leo said, sitting on his chair across Kale. They sat in silence, awkwardly eating their food. “How long have you had your powers?” Kale asked, finally breaking the silence. “I found out just a year ago,” Leo answered. “During school, actually.” “School?” Kale said. “I was homeschooled; my parents knew what I was when I was five. So, what happened?” Leo grimaced, remembering the memory. “I lost most of my friends that day. They all thought I was freak. Even I do.” Kale looked like she wanted to say something, but Leo continued. “I was at the cafeteria when one of my friends was getting picked on by a group of guys. He tried to fight back, but it was five to one, pushing him back and forth. The teachers pretended nothing was happening, because the leader of the group’s father owned most of the land. He could just kick them out easily. “I was getting angry, even angrier than I was my whole life. I went up to the one of the boys and punched him, right in the face. I was bracing myself for more of the guys, but they didn’t charge at me. They were gawking at me. At first I didn’t know why, but I looked down at myself. I was bursting to flames. But I wasn’t burning. My clothes weren’t getting singed. But the people around me started to scream and run out when a table next to me got burned. Even my friend was running out, staring at me as if I wasn’t a freak, but a monster.” Kale looked at Leo with sympathy, asking; “All this happened because you were angry?” He nodded. “I ran away that night. My own mother couldn’t even come up to me and hug me. She was afraid. So I wandered around for a while, spending the last of my money. But that wasn’t the least of my worries,” “The Hunters,” Kale said. “I didn’t know the school called the police, who informed the Hunters what I could do. They tried hunting me down, but I fought as hard as I could.” Leo looked at Kale. “The same ally you took was the same I took a year ago. The Hunters were chasing me like the way they chased you. But Carter’s the one who led me here. He was hiding in this room for ten years, pretending to be normal if he wanted to buy something. He took me in. We were living together, until…” Leo shook his head, not able to continue. “Until what?” Kale asked. Leo closed his eyes. “Until the Hunters took him away. I don’t know if they killed him, but he was taken trying to save me.” Leo felt as if a whole weight on his shoulder had been lifted. He thought telling someone about Carter would be like re-living the moment. But instead it made him feel better. Kale got up and began to clear the table while Leo put them in the small sink. “Well,” Leo began. “I told you my story. What’s yours?” “Wierd story, actually." Kale began.
"Wierd? Compared to what we've been through?" Leo half-teased. Kale laughed.
"My parents knew what I was when I was five, like I said before. It was three years before Anna, my sister, was born. My father was fixing the roof; we had a leak, I think. Anyway, he was on a ladder, on the edge of the roof, when my neighbor’s dog came. I was trying to make him go away, but that was a mistake. He ran into the ladder and made it tip over, causing my father to fall. He was unconscious while he was on the ground. It started to rain, and I didn’t know what to do. My mother was away, and I was too afraid to call for help. Water was staining his shirt, and I put my hand over it. He started to glow, like your hand did. I was so terrified before, but when I saw the glow, I felt calm. My father opened his eyes. He got up from where he was as if nothing happened to him.” Kale stopped, finishing her story. “How did the Hunters know you were one of us?” Leo asked. “I didn’t really know they knew until four days ago. When I healed my dad, someone probably saw me and contacted them. My mom said we had to leave the house, and we moved. But days ago, when my mom told me they were coming, she said I had to leave. My parents were upset, but Anna was devastated.” Kale’s voice got softer. “I had to leave; I knew they’d put my family in danger. But when I was just going to leave, the Hunters were already there, waiting to catch me. So I ran. I kept running and hiding for four days straight, terrified of the thought that they might catch me. But I took that ally, and I found you,” Kale finished, playing with something in her hands. “What’s that?” Leo asked. Kale looked up at him and held up a silver locket. It had the words ‘Never give up’ encrypted on it. “My mother gave me this the night I left.” Kale said, winding the back of it. She opened her locket and a tinkling melody filled the room. It made Leo feel calm. He got up and went to a drawer. Opening it, he found a small ring given to him by Carter. “This is the last thing I had that Carter loved. He gave it to me the night before The Hunters took him away,” Leo looked at Kale, who yawned slightly. Leo smiled to himself. “I think it’s time to sleep,” He said.

Chapter four Leo lent Kale some of his old clothes before she slept. Leo insisted that she sleep on his bed, and he sleep on the floor. “Fine,” Kale smiled, giving in. She wanted desperately to sleep. She needed energy for the morning. But just as she Leo closed the small lamp, she couldn’t stop thinking. I am going to leave in the morning, but where am I going to go? She thought. I have to stay away from home, and I can’t make friends with anyone. They would be in danger if I did. Kale scowled in the darkness. It’s too late. I already made a friend. She tried to stop thinking about Anna and her beautiful face. Anna had the same hair as Kale, but her eyes were different. They were a brighter shade of green, flecked with gray. But Kale was the only one in her family with ice blue eyes. She always wondered if your abilities messed with your features. She closed her eyes and listened. Leo’s soft breaths were rhythmic; she could almost feel his chest heaving up and down. Slowly, but steadily, she felt herself getting pulled into a deep sleep… ********************* Kale woke up to a noise. She sat up groggily from her bed. Faint light escaped from the door to the room, lighting the area. Kale got up from the bed and slowly walked toward the door. She heard voices. Pressing her ear against the wall, she heard; “You’re sure she came through this ally-way, Royce?” Kale gasped. It was the men from yesterday. Another voice, probably Royce, said; “Yes. We though she ran out from the other way, but when we followed, she was nowhere to be found,” “These are abandoned buildings. She probably ran inside one.” The first man said. “That fast? Impossible,” Royce said. “We’re dealing with people with extra abilities. Are you telling me that wall of ice yesterday was impossible?” Kale heard the first one say with annoyance. She didn’t hear any more of it. She crept toward Leo when she stepped on something. It snapped, and the voices outside stopped. “Leo!” She whispered urgently. Leo stirred. She nudged him awake. “Wha…?” He sat up. Kale stayed silent. “In there,” A voice outside said. Immediately Leo rose out of bed grabbing his backpack from the floor. He opened the drawer and took out a roll of money. Outside, they tried kicking the door open. Kale put one hand in front of her and aimed at the door. Ice froze it in place. That can buy us some time, she thought. Leo pushed the round table aside and opened a trap door. He grabbed Kale’s hand and noiselessly pushed her inside, just as the door was kicked open.
I will not die.

Leo landed on something soft. His eyes were squeezed shut when he pushed himself and Kale inside the trap door. He slowly opened his eyes and held out his hand. A small flash of light sparked as he saw himself on top of a blushing Kale. Leo quickly moved aside, letting her stand. He mentally cursed himself. Leo heard footsteps above him. He motioned Kale not to make any noise. She nodded. He started to walk silently, and Kale followed. It was a tunnel, and Leo had no idea where it led to, but he had no other choice. He looked at Kale. She was gripping her locket. Poor girl, he thought. She probably misses her family. It wasn’t until Leo actually thought about family that he realized how much he missed his. How much it ached him to hear his father’s voice and meet his mother’s soft gaze. It wasn’t until they reached the middle of the tunnel when they heard a crash. Kale gasped when Leo stopped his flame. Everything was dark. He couldn’t even see his hands in front of his face. Then someone at the beginning of the tunnel said; “We should follow them. They couldn’t be far behind,” Leo reached out to Kale. He grabbed on to her shirt and pushed her slightly forward, not letting go. She got the message, and started to move silently. But the footsteps behind them got closer and closer, and Leo could feel Kale panicking. They heard something click, and a flashlight behind them went on. Without thinking, Leo pushed himself and Kale into a wall. He crouched down and Kale did the same. “Leo…” Kale whispered as the footsteps got closer. They heard a small cock of a gun. The footsteps passed Leo and Kale. It stopped only a few feet away from them, and then turned to walk back. Kale froze in Leo’s arms as he passed them again. “I don’t think they’re in here!” The man called out right in front of Leo. The man walked away in a hurry. Leo put his hand on Kale’s and noticed her gripping her locket. Leo’s hand slipped away, but his thumb touched the winding button. The tinkling lullaby filled the tunnel. The voices stopped and Leo froze. Then dozens of stomping footsteps came toward them. “Get ready,” Leo whispered to Kale. The footsteps were close. “For what?” Kale’s voice was slightly trembling. The footsteps were even closer. “To fight!” Leo got up, aiming his fire in all directions. It lit up the tunnel with a blinding glow, sending the Hunters back in shock and in pain. Kale got up, pointing with her fingers at the Hunters on the floor. With a light blue glow, she froze them on the floor. More footsteps were running toward them. Leo grabbed Kale’s hand. “Come on!” He yelled, running toward the end of the cave. They sprinted toward the stairs they saw ahead of them. Leo’s legs ached, but he urged himself to move. Kale was running ahead of him. That girl is fast. Leo heard something whip toward them. Leo looked behind him. Through the dim lightwas bright enough to see a rope whipping toward him. Kale saw it too. She pushed him out of the way and got caught instead. The rope wrapped around her and yanked her back. “Kale!” Leo shouted as she was pulled. Leo aimed his fingers to the rope and burned it in a flash. Kale was thrown of balance and fell on the floor. Leo helped her up and supported her. “Let me go,” Kale said, forcing the words out. Leo obeyed. She took a deep breath and turned, summoning a whole lock of ice between us and the Hunters. She kept her hands aimed at the wall, making it stronger and stronger. But Leo knew that it was making her weaker. “Kale, that’s enough!” Leo said. Kale was breathing heavily. “I’m... almost....done!” She gasped as she slowly turned and pushed Leo to run. There were stone stairs ahead and they both climbed two steps at a time. Leo kicked a wooden door open. Blinding light filled his vision, but when it cleared he saw...

Chapter six (Part one)
Downtown? Kale thought. She turned around and the door disappeared behind them.
Okay.... People dressed in high fashion glared at Kale and Leo, as if they were alien. Kale looked at a near-by window, and her reflection made her flinch. Her silky black hair was tousled, and her clothes ripped and dirty.
“Leo...” She nudged him. “We should leave, before we cause any suspicions.”
Leo nodded. “We should keep a low profile. Come on, I know where to go,” Kale followed Leo down the street and into a shop. “Spa salon, spray tans and dyes!” It read. Leo opened the door and held it for Kale. When she stepped in, she almost gagged. Kale had never been the girly type. Barbie-like girls were giggling as they were dying, drying, or highlighting their hair. A few girls who were manicuring stopped laughing as soon as they saw Kale. She shot them a dirty look. They were just like those girls at school. They didn’t accept Kale because of her eyes. They said they were evil eyes, ones not meant to be seen. Her mother had said her eyes were as bright as icy sapphires, outlined with darker irises. But even her pale-white skin made her feel like she didn’t fit in.
A freak, they used to call her. Leo was talking to a blonde employee with a name tag that read “Annabel”. Kale saw her nod and takes a look at her. The employee smiled. She walked over to Kale and held out her hand.
“I’m Annabel. Your boyfriend over there told me you wanted a full makeover?” She asked. Before Kale answered, she shot a look at Leo. Boyfriend? It seemed to say. Then she looked at Annabel and nodded.
“A wig would be nice. I would also like a spray tan and contacts, please.”
“Right this way,” Kale followed Annabel down an aisle. They stopped in front of wigs of every style and shade. “What would you like?” Annabel asked. Kale scanned the wigs. She needed to pick out something different, something like— “That one,” She said, pointing at a curly red wig. Annabel looked at her wearily. “Are you sure? It doesn’t seem like your color.” She said. Kale just gently raised the red wig and asked where the contacts were.
“Follow me,” Annabel muttered, walking hurriedly down another aisle. There were different shades of blue, green, brown, gray, and many more. They practically filled the whole counter. I looked carefully, trying to find something that would conceal my true eyes color. I found a perfect shade. It was a mixture of her father’s light brown eyes, and her mother’s gray. Stormy green, it was labelled. “That one, please,” Kale said, partially excited. “Last thing,” She said. “What’s that?” “Spray tan,” Kale said. “I know I perfect shade.” Annabel smiled. “I’ll be right back.” A few minutes later, Annabel came back with a can of spray.
“This is a creamy Irish color. It’ll go well with green eyes and red hair. Let’s put them on you.” She said. Kale followed Annabel into a small room with tiled walls. Annabel handed her a small tank top and shorts.
“Put these on. I need to spray your legs and arms, too.” She instructed. Annabel left the room until Kale finished changing. She might as well throw her former clothes into the wastebasket. Annabel came into the room, ready to spray Kale. She shook the can. When she sprayed, it felt cold on Kale’s back. She shuddered slightly. Awkward silence filled the room as Annabel lightly sprayed Kale.
“So,” Annabel began, trying to make small talk. “How long have you been with your boyfriend?”
Well, this is going to be tough, Kale thought. Though she said; “Quite a while. About a year and a half.”
“Really? How did you meet?” She asked, happy she found a conversation. Kale hesitated.
“We ran into each other at the beach.”
“What is he like?” Kale closed her eyes. She wanted her to stop asking questions. But she had to answer.
“He was gentle when we first met. He’s brave, and fun to be around.” Strange, it felt as if she were speaking her heart. She smiled softly to herself. “What I like about him the most,” She turned her head to face Annabel. “Is that he would sacrifice his life to protect the people he cares about.” Annabel smiled softly, then shook her head as if she were about to say something.
“You’re finished.” She said. “Let’s take you to put on your wig and contacts.” Kale was feeling her sleepless night creep up on her. Annabel sat her on a salon chair. She placed the rich auburn wig on her head. Next, she helped Kale put on the contacts. Annabel smiled.
“I was wrong. That does suit you.” She whirled Kale’s chair to face a mirror. Kale didn’t recognize her own reflection. This girl had wide, tired sandy emerald eyes. Her creamy skin was glowing, and her curly rich hair bounced with every move. Kale was told she was beautiful before, but now she felt special. In a normal kind of way. “Just a suggestion,” Annabel began. “Are you interested in new pairs of clothes?” Kale glanced down at her ratty sweatpants and t-shirt. She nodded eagerly. Annabel led Kale by the hand to the clothes section. Kale walked down the aisle, running her hands through the hung clothes. Leo had said to get disguises, but he didn’t say anything about her own style of clothes.

Chapter six (part two)
Kale came out of a dressing room wearing dark skinny jeans, knee high combat boots, a white tank top, and a waist length light blue jeans jacket. On her red wig lay a black fedora. She saw Annabel and grinned.
“That’s an awesome outfit!” Annabel exclaimed. If Kale wasn’t on the run, she’d want to hang out with Annabel. She seemed such a lively person to hang out with. Annabel looked past Kale and smiled.
“Your boyfriend’s here.” She announced. Kale turned. Leo was walking toward them, wearing a half smile. His peach skin was a dark tan. Instead of his bright red hair, he wore a dark wig. His eyes were a soft golden brown. It seemed he also got to choose his own outfit, too. He wore a black leather jacket over a plain white t-shirt. His designer jeans were expertly ripped.
“You look good,” He complemented.
“You too,” Kale said with a smile. He handed Annabel a hundred dollar bill.
“Let’s go,” He said, walking toward the door. All of a sudden, the doors shot open. Men in black suits came in wearing dark sunglasses. It was the Hunters. The leader motioned five of his men to search the salon. The group obeyed.
“Excuse me!” Annabel exclaimed. “But you can’t just barge in here.”
The leader took out a wallet. “I’m with...The FBI.” He held two pictures. “Have you seen these two?” The pictures were of her and Leo. Kale panicked. Annabel looked up at her, alarmed. Kale shook her head quickly.
“Yes, I have,” Annabel said. Kale’s eyes widened in horror. “I saw them go north. Far north.” Kale let out a breath and nodded Annabel a grateful thank-you.
“Thank you for your time,” The leader said, slightly suspicious. Kale hurriedly turned her back to them as soon as they came to the door. But one of them, the leader, bumped into her.
“Sorry,” He muttered. Kale turned, and then quickly regretted it. He started to look at her face, recognizing something. But he shook his head, walking out. His group followed behind. Kale and Leo let out a breath. But Annabel marched toward them. “Who are you two?” She started. “I want answers. Now.”

Chapter seven
Leo exhaled slowly, flashing an uneasy glance at Kale. She took a deep breath and said;
“Perhaps we do owe you an explanation...” She began. She seemed unable to continue.
“Annabel,” Leo said, staring into her eyes. “If we tell you this, you have to promise not to tell anyone.”
She nodded wearily. “We’re elementals. The agents that burst in here are called ‘Hunters’. They’re a secret organization that tracks down people like Kale and I. We’re running away from them, and we needed disguises.” Leo said.
Annabel raised one eyebrow, then took in a sharp breath. “Do think this is a joke? I had FBI agents barging into my salon and asking about you two! You could be criminals for all I know!” Her eyes flamed. Kale held out her hand hesitantly. Ice formed on the palm of her hand. She looked at Leo, and at once he held out his hand, a flame bursting to melt the ice. Annabel gawked. Leo expected her to scream, or tell them to get out of her shop, but instead she swallowed and took a deep breath. “So...a-all this is true?” Annabel stammered. Kale and Leo nodded. Annabel shook her head, her spiky blonde hair tousling. “This isn’t possible,” She muttered.
“I wish that were true,” Leo said softly.
“Where are you two going to go now?” Annabel asked hesitantly. Kale’s eyes lit up.
“We have our disguises. We could see my mother!” Annabel looked doubtful, but Leo nodded slowly.
“Perhaps your mother knows a few things about us elementals?” Kale’s eyes turned thoughtful.
“I don’t think so...But if we want to find out, we go to my house.”
Leo looked sheepishly at Annabel. “Do you have a car?” He asked. Annabel sighed and nodded.
“Let’s just leave. I’d rather go with you anyway, than give a few Barbie girls a personal makeover,”
efefefefef
The leader of the Hunters was sitting in his office, looking at his security footage that was secretly hidden around the world. The screens took up the whole wall. He heard a knock on the door.
“Come in,” He called out. One of his close agents came in.
The leader turned. “Ah, Royce. I assume you come with good news?” He wondered. Royce shifted uncomfortably.
“No, sir. We didn’t find the elementals.” He said quietly. He looked at his boss, expecting a harsh tone to come out of his mouth. Instead, the leader bizarrely smiled.
“Good,” He said. “You may leave.”
Dumbfounded, Royce picked up his pace and walked out the door. The leader looked back at his screens, smiling to himself. The leader didn’t need to find them. He had his own trick up his sleeve that would make them come to him.
